Mantra 1
वाणिज्यम्। इन्द्रमहं वणिजं चोदयामि स न ऐतु पुरएता नो अस्तु । नुदन्नरातिं परिपन्थिनं मृगं स ईशानो धनदा अस्तु मह्यम्
For commerce: Indra and the merchant I set in motion; let him go—our forerunner, let him be for us. Thrusting away mischance, the beast that haunts the path, let him, the sovereign, the wealth-bestower, be for me.
Mantra 2
ये पन्थानो बहवो देवयाना अन्तरा द्यावापृथिवी संचरन्ति । ते मा जुषन्तां पयसा घृतेन यथा क्रीत्वा धनमाहराणि
What paths are many, god-going, that course between Heaven and Earth—let them be gracious unto me with milk and with ghee, that, having bought, I may bring wealth back home.
Mantra 3
इध्मेनाग्न इच्छमानो घृतेन जुहोमि हव्यं तरसे बलाय । यावदीशे ब्रह्मणा वन्दमान इमां धियं शतसेयाय देवीम्
With fuel, O Agni, desiring, with ghee I offer oblation for overcoming, for strength. So far as I have mastery, with brahman reverencing, this goddess Thought I invoke for hundredfold winning.
Mantra 4
इमामग्ने शरणिं मीमृषो नो यमध्वानमगाम दूरम्। शुनं नो अस्तु प्रपणो विक्रयश्च प्रतिपणः फलिनं मा कृणोतु । इदं हव्यं संविदानौ जुषेथां शुनं नो अस्तु चरितमुत्थितं च
O Agni, make thou for us this refuge—what far road I have gone. Auspicious for us be the market-trade and the sale; and may the counter-bargain make me fruitful in gain. This oblation, ye twain in concord, accept; auspicious for us be what is travelled and what is set afoot.
Mantra 5
येन धनेन प्रपणं चरामि धनेन देवा धनमिच्छमानः । तन्मे भूयो भवतु मा कनीयोऽग्ने सातघ्नो देवान् हविषा नि षेध
With what wealth I fare about in the market, with wealth—seeking wealth—(I and) the gods: let that for me become yet more, not less. O Agni, thou slayer of hindrance to winning, with oblation set the gods fast (to my cause).
Mantra 6
येन धनेन प्रपणं चरामि धनेन देवा धनमिच्छमानः । तस्मिन् म इन्द्रो रुचिमा दधातु प्रजापतिः सविता सोमो अग्निः
With what wealth I move in market-trade, with wealth—seeking wealth—(I and) the gods: therein let Indra set for me splendour; (and) Prajāpati, Savitar, Soma, Agni.
Mantra 7
उप त्वा नमसा वयं होतर्वैश्वानर स्तुमः । स नः प्रजास्वात्मसु गोषु प्राणेषु जागृहि
With reverence we draw near to thee; O Hotar, Vaiśvānara, we praise thee. Do thou keep watch for us among our offspring, in our own persons, among our cattle, in our life-breaths.
Mantra 8
विश्वाहा ते सदमिद् भरेमाश्वायेव तिष्ठते जातवेदः । रायस्पोषेण समिषा मदन्तो मा ते अग्ने प्रतिवेशा रिषाम
Day by day, ever indeed, would we bring to thee—O Jātavedas, standing ready as a horse—(offerings), rejoicing with wealth’s increase and with refreshment. O Agni, may we not suffer harm from thy neighbors.
It is used to begin or protect a trading journey—asking Indra to go ahead on the road, remove dangers, and ensure profit and safe return.
Indra functions as the powerful forerunner and wealth-giver for the journey, while Agni—through offering—‘anchors’ divine support to the enterprise so gains increase rather than diminish.
A small havis offering with Agni strengthens the rite, but the hymn can also be recited at departure with a symbolic or mental offering when a fire is not available.
