Mantra 1
अच्छा म इन्द्रं मतयः स्वर्विदः सध्रीचीर्विश्वा उशतीरनूषत । परि ष्वजन्ते जनयो यथा पतिं मर्यं न शुन्ध्युं मघवानमूतये
Toward Indra, for me, have the thoughts—heaven-winning, straight-directed, all of them, eager—sung their laud. Round about they press him on, as women (press) a husband, as (they press) a bridegroom, the purified, the bounteous, for our succour.
Mantra 2
न घा त्वद्रिगप वेति मे मनस्त्वे इत् कामं पुरुहूत शिश्रय । राजेव दस्म नि षदोऽधि बर्हिष्यस्मिन्त्सु सोमेवपानमस्तु ते
Not, indeed, hymn-estranged, goes my mind away from thee: on thee alone, O much-invoked, have I set my desire. Like a king, O wondrous one, sit thee down upon this barhis; and let there be for thee a draught, as (dear) as Soma.
Mantra 3
विषूवृदिन्द्रो अमुतेरुत क्षुधः स इद् रायो मघवा वस्व ईशते । तस्येदिमे प्रवणे सप्त सिन्धवो वयो वर्धन्ति वृषभस्य शुष्मिणः
Indra, the all-repeller, (saves) from strait and also from hunger; he, the bounteous, is lord of riches, of goodly treasures. Under the might of that vehement Bull, these Seven Rivers in their slope increase their vital strength.
Mantra 4
वयो न वृक्षं सुपलाशमासदन्त्सोमास इन्द्रं मन्दिनश्चमूषदः । प्रैषामनीकं शवसा दविद्युतद् विदत् स्व१र्मनवे ज्योतिरार्यम्
As birds upon a fair-leaved tree alight, so the gladdening Soma-juices, seated in the bowl, alighted upon Indra. Forth flashed their front with might; it won for Manu heaven—light, the noble (Aryan) radiance.
Mantra 5
कृतं न श्वघ्नी वि चिनोति देवने संवर्गं यन्मघवा सूर्यं जयत्। न तत् ते अन्यो अनु वीर्यं शकन्न पुराणो मघवन् नोत नूतनः
As the winning cast, the ‘dog-slayer,’ in the game gathers up the whole sweep, when Maghavan won the Sun—so none other can follow after that heroic power of thine, O bounteous one: neither the ancient, nor yet the new.
Mantra 6
विशंविशं मघवा पर्यशायत जनानां धेना अवचाकशद् वृषा । यस्याह शक्रः सवनेषु रण्यति स तीव्रैः सोमैः सहते पृतन्यतः
From clan to clan the Bounteous One lay ranged about; the Bull made manifest the milch-kine of the peoples. He—verily Śakra—who in the pressings taketh delight, with keen Soma-draughts prevaileth over the battling foe.
Mantra 7
आपो न सिन्धुमभि यत् समक्षरन्त्सोमास इन्द्रं कुल्या इव ह्रदम्। वर्धन्ति विप्रा महो अस्य सादने यवं न वृष्टिर्दिव्येन दानुना
As waters toward the river, when they flow together, so stream the Somes to Indra, as channels to a pool. The inspired priests increase his greatness in the sitting-place, as rain with heavenly bounty maketh barley to wax.
Mantra 8
वृषा न क्रुद्धः पतयद् रजःस्वा यो अर्यपत्नीरकृणोदिमा अपः । स सुन्वते मघवा जीरदानवेऽविन्दज्ज्योतिर्मनवे हविष्मते
Like a wrathful bull he rushed through the airy realms—he who made these waters ‘Arya-wived’ and ordered. That Bounteous One, for the Soma-presser, the swift-giving offerer, won light for Manu, for him who bringeth oblation.
Mantra 9
उज्जायतां परशुज्योतिषा सह भूया ऋतस्य सुदुघा पुराणवत्। वि रोचतामरुषो भानुना शुचिः स्व१र्ण शुक्रं शुशुचीत सत्पतिः
Let it arise, with cleaving light therewith; be once again, as of old, the well-milking cow of ṛta. Let the ruddy one shine far and wide with beam, the pure; gold-bright, splendid, hath the lord of the good made himself to gleam.
Mantra 10
गोभिष्टरेमामतिं दुरेवां यवेन क्षुधं पुरुहूत विश्वाम्। वयं राजभिः प्रथमा धनान्यस्माकेन वृजनेना जयेम
With cows may we pass over the evil strait; with barley, O Much-invoked, all hunger. May we, with kings, be foremost in treasures; with our own fighting-band may we win the victory.
Mantra 11
बृहस्पतिर्नः परि पातु पश्चादुतोत्तरस्मादधरादघायोः । इन्द्रः पुरस्तादुत मध्यतो नः सखा सखिभ्यो वरिवः कृणोतु
May Bṛhaspati guard us round about—from behind, and from the north, and from below, against the evil. Let Indra, from the front and from the midst, as friend, make for us and for our friends free scope and safety.
Mantra 12
बृहस्पते युवमिन्द्रश्च वस्वो दिव्यस्येशाथे उत पार्थिवस्य । धत्तं रयिं स्तुवते कीरये चिद् यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः
O Bṛhaspati, thou and Indra are lords of wealth, both heavenly and earthly. Bestow ye riches on the praiser, yea, on the singer; and ever with prospering safeguards do ye protect us.
For prosperity (cattle, grain, treasures) and victory, while also creating strong protection against hostile forces—especially by invoking an all-direction guard through Bṛhaspati and Indra.
Indra supplies conquering force and success in contest; Bṛhaspati supplies priestly protection and stabilizing counsel. Together they give victory that is also safeguarded from backlash and hidden harm.
