Sukta 125

Mantra 1

अपेन्द्र प्राचो मघवन्नमित्रानपापाचो अभिभूते नुदस्व । अपोदीचो अप शूराधराच उरौ यथा तव शर्मन् मदेम

Away, O Indra, drive the eastern foes away, O Maghavan; as Overpowerer thrust them forth. Away the western, away the northern; away, O Hero, those from beneath, that in thy wide protection we may dwell rejoicing.

Mantra 2

कुविदङ्ग यवमन्तो यवं चिद् यथा दान्त्यनुपूर्वं वियूय । इहेहैषां कृणुहि भोजनानि ये बर्हिषो नमोवृक्तिं न जग्मुः

May it be, pray, that the barley-wealthy, even barley itself, give in ordered course, in portions. Here—here—do thou prepare for these their banquets, who have not attained the due observance of homage at the sacred grass.

Mantra 3

नहि स्थूर्यृतुथा यातमस्ति नोत श्रवो विविदे संगमेषु । गव्यन्त इन्द्रं सख्याय विप्रा अश्वायन्तो वृषणं वाजयन्तः

For, O Stūri, there is no timely coming so, nor is fame won in the encounters: the inspired, seeking cattle, seek Indra for friendship—seeking horses, the Bull, striving for the prize.

Mantra 4

युवं सुराममश्विना नमुचावासुरे सचा । विपिपाना शुभस्पती इन्द्रं कर्मस्वावतम्

Ye twain, O Aśvins, drank the surā with Namuci the Asura; drinking deep, O Lords of splendour, ye aided Indra in his deeds.

Mantra 5

पुत्रमिव पितरावश्विनोभेन्द्रावथुः काव्यैर्दंसनाभिः । यत् सुरामं व्यपिबः शचीभिः सरस्वती त्वा मघवन्नभिष्णक्

As parents a son, the two Aśvins—yea—protected thee, O Indra, with Kāvya-craft and wondrous powers; when thou didst drink the surā with thy efficacious might, Sarasvatī, O Maghavan, set thee forward in strength.

Mantra 6

इन्द्रः सुत्रामा स्ववाँ अवोभिः सुमृडीको भवतु विश्ववेदाः । बाधतां द्वेषो अभयं नः कृणोतु सुवीर्यस्य पतयः स्याम

May Indra, the good Protector, self-strong, with his saving aids, be gracious—All-knowing. Let him beat back Hatred; let him make for us Fearlessness: may we be lords of good hero-power.

Mantra 7

स सुत्रामा स्ववाँ इन्द्रो अस्मदाराच्चिद् द्वेषः सनुतर्युयोतु । तस्य वयं सुमतौ यज्ञियस्यापि भद्रे सौमनसे स्याम

May he—Indra, good Protector, self-strong—remove Hatred from us, yea, set it yet farther away. Under that worshipful One’s good favor may we abide, moreover, in welfare and in kindly concord.
