वेरध्वरस्य दूत्यानि विद्वानुभे अन्ता रोदसी संचिकित्वान् । दूत ईयसे प्रदिव उराणो विदुष्टरो दिव आरोधनानि ॥
véḥ adhvarásya dūtyā́ni vidvā́n ubhé antā́ ródasī sam-cikitvā́n | dūtá ī́yase pra-díva urāṇó vidúṣ-ṭaro divá ā́-rodhanā́ni ||
Agni, knowing the missions of the sacrifice and comprehending both ends of Heaven and Earth, goes as the messenger from the radiant height, most wise, knowing the ascents and passages of Heaven.
Agni as dūta is the conscious will that can translate aspiration into higher contacts. ‘Both ends of Heaven and Earth’ are the upper and lower ranges of our being—spiritual mind and embodied nature. Agni understands the ‘embassies’ (dūtyāni) of the inner yajña: which offerings (movements) must be carried upward and what light/power must be brought down. From the ‘luminous height’ (pradivaḥ) he ranges, meaning the will becomes capable of operating from a higher poise, knowing the inner ‘paths’ (ārodhanāni) of ascent into the divine Mind.
Transformation requires an inner mediator that knows both the heights of consciousness and the needs of embodied life; true progress comes by learning the passages of ascent and descent and making the will a wise messenger.
Agni the messenger, Cosmic mediation, Ascent to heaven, Heaven-Earth integration
In Vāmadeva’s Agni hymns, Agni is repeatedly the mediator and knower of paths—an inner guide rather than a mere ritual flame.
This verse highlights the yogic function of Agni as the translator between planes, a key Aurobindonian theme: ascent to higher light and descent into works.
Divine envoy between Heaven and Earth; knower of ways; conductor of offerings and bringer of divine responses.
Disciplined will guided by insight; capacity to move between inner silence/light and outer action without loss.
Agni invoked as messenger in soma and non-soma rites; hotṛ function and general agni-stuti

4 × ~11 syllables
Expansive and striding; suitable for describing wide ranges (‘two ends’) and movements (‘ascents’).
Gives a sense of verticality and passage—inviting the listener to feel inner ascent and the guiding intelligence of Agni.
Agni’s dūtya (messenger role) in Soma ritual: carrying havis to the gods and bringing back divine force; used to affirm the mediator function before/within offering sequences.
Before offerings and during transitions of the rite (inviting the gods, establishing connection)
Recitation to seat Agni as dūta and open the ‘paths’ for oblations and divine influx
Use before important decisions/actions: meditate on connecting higher clarity (heaven) with practical steps (earth) through a steady will.
dūtá from √dū ‘to send, dispatch’ (messenger); Agni as the mediating power that ‘carries’ offerings and also brings down inspirations. ródasī (dual) denotes the paired cosmic realms; psychologically, the upper (illumined mind) and lower (embodied life). ārodhanā́ni: ‘ways of ascent/access’; interpret as inner degrees/steps of rising consciousness (not merely physical ‘heaven’s gates’).
mediation between higher and lower worlds, ascent (āroha) as spiritual passage, knowledge as power (vidvān)
Agni knows the lawful ‘passages’—movement according to Ṛta rather than impulse.
True knowledge is operational: knowing the ways of ascent, not only ideas.
Establishing the link between worlds—bridge-building as a continuing creation in consciousness.
Integral yoga psychology (planes of consciousness; ascent/descent).
The will-fire rises along inner nadis/paths to illumined mind and returns with guidance for embodied life.
Invoke Agni as inner messenger: ‘carry my aspiration upward; bring the right light down.’
Viśuddha (messenger/communication) linking to Ājñā (higher guidance).
Alternate attention up/down the central channel with breath: inhale ‘upward offering’, exhale ‘downward guidance’ (5–7 cycles).
Uplifted, wide, and oriented to ascent.
Before meditation, name the two ends: (1) highest clarity you can sense, (2) the concrete life-issue. Offer the issue upward; wait for a quiet directive to descend.
Follow saṃhitā accents; emphasize udātta on key motion/knowledge words (vidvān, saṃcikitvān, dūta, pradivaḥ, ārodhanāni).
Keep a clear lift on dūta īyase; let the cadence fall gently at pāda ends to suggest ‘passages’.
rodaśī with clear long ī., saṃcikitvān: nasal ‘ṃ’ before ‘c’., ārodhanāni: long ā at start; aspirated dh., pradivaḥ: light ‘pr’ cluster, short final ḥ breath.
Bright and upward-leading; slightly quicker on the ‘going’ phrases.
