Bhojanīya-niyama-vidhiḥ
Ritual-Manual (Dietary Regulation and Offering Protocols)
Adhyāya 119 continues the didactic dialogue between Pṛthivī (Dharāṇī/Vasudhā) and Varāha. After hearing a prior karmavidhi described as conducive to liberation from saṃsāra, Pṛthivī asks a practical and procedural question: by what substances (dravya) and with what mantra-connection should one perform the prāpaṇa (a specific offering/ritual act) so as to please the deity. Varāha, presented as dharma-jña and skilled in instruction, responds by enumerating acceptable grains, vegetables, legumes, and animal products appropriate for ritual use, including items to be avoided. The chapter frames dietary selection as a form of ritual discipline that supports auspiciousness and social order, while implicitly linking terrestrial abundance (Pṛthivī’s domain) to regulated, non-excessive human consumption and offering practices.
Verse 1
Verse 2
Verse 3
Verse 4
Verse 5
Verse 6
Verse 7
Verse 8
Verse 9
Verse 10
Verse 11
Verse 12
Verse 13
Verse 14
Verse 15
Verse 16
Verse 17
Verse 18
Verse 19
Verse 20
Pṛthivī, having heard a prior karmavidhi praised as saṃsāra-mocaka (conducive to liberation), turns to a practical doubt: which dravyas, and with what mantra-linked propriety, should be used for prāpaṇa so that the deity is genuinely pleased and the rite remains faultless.
Varāha answers as dharma-jña by laying out a rule-set of dietary and offering fitness (dravya-śuddhi): enumerating permissible grains, vegetables, legumes, and select animal-derived products for ritual use and consumption, while also indicating varjya/niṣedha items that generate ritual defect (doṣa) or inauspiciousness.
The instruction culminates in the principle that food-choice itself is a limb of ritual discipline: offerings and eating must be regulated by dharma-based suitability (yogya/karmaṇya), avoiding excess and prohibited substances, thereby aligning human consumption with auspicious order and with Pṛthivī’s rightly-managed abundance.
No explicit toponyms, river systems, or named sacred sites are mentioned in this adhyāya; the setting is a dialogic, instructional frame centered on Pṛthivī as the terrestrial principle rather than a specific locale.
The text presents regulated food selection as an ethical-ritual discipline: substances used for prāpaṇa and yajña should be chosen according to dharma-based fitness (yogya/karmaṇya), with explicit prohibitions (varjya) to prevent ritual fault (aparādha) and to maintain auspicious, socially ordered consumption tied to Pṛthivī’s terrestrial abundance.
No explicit tithi, lunar phase, month (māsa), or seasonal (ṛtu) markers are stated in the provided verses of Adhyāya 119; the prescriptions are framed as general procedural rules for ritual performance rather than time-bound observances.
Environmental balance appears implicitly through Pṛthivī’s role as interlocutor and through the emphasis on disciplined use of terrestrial produce (grains, vegetables, legumes) rather than indiscriminate consumption. By defining what is appropriate or inappropriate for offerings and eating, the chapter encodes an early form of stewardship: human ritual life is depicted as dependent on, and responsible toward, the ordered management of Earth-derived resources.
No dynastic lineages, kings, sages by name, or administrative figures are referenced in the provided text. The narrative remains focused on the instructional exchange between Varāha and Pṛthivī and on generalized categories such as brāhmaṇas who are vedapāraga (learned in the Veda).
