Devata

Indra

This hymn is a Soma-invitation and praise of Indra, urging him to drink the pressed sap, enter the shared exhilaration (sadhamāda), and protect the singers with his inspired power (dhī). It celebrates Indra’s unmatched might (indriya) that leads toward the Light, and closes with a more esoteric reflection invoking Rohita/Pākasthāmā as a bounteous, strength-giving principle allied to Indra’s force.

Inside Sukta 3

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct imperative invitation: Indra is asked to drink the pressed Soma and awaken as the singers’ intimate helper.

  2. Development

The hymn broadens into exalted praise—no mortal poet attains Indra’s greatness; his indriya remains unsurpassed even amid many hymns aimed at the Light.

  3. Climax

Recognition of Indra’s incomparable power as the decisive force behind uplift toward svar (the luminous realm) and communal increase.

  4. Where it settles

A concluding, more symbolic statement links strength-giving bounty (Rohita/Pākasthāmā imagery) with the hymn’s core aim: mature enjoyment, protection, and fulfilled giving.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is lauded as the Soma-drinker, the mighty lord of indriya (sovereign strength), companion of the sacrificers, and protector whose inspired thoughts (dhī) foster the people. He is praised as peerless in greatness, even when many poets ‘weave’ hymns toward the heavenly Light.
  • Cosmic functionChampion of ṛta in the dynamic world: he breaks obstacles, releases abundance, wins space and light, and empowers the community through victory, rain, and prosperity.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened force of will and courageous clarity: the power that drinks the ‘Soma’ of concentrated delight, dispels inner obstruction, and protects the mind with right inspiration (dhī).

The seer

  • Kaṇva (Kaṇva lineage; attribution within the Kāṇva tradition)Kāṇva (Kaṇva gotra/śākhā tradition) · Foremost among Rigvedic seer-families for Indra–Soma praise: vigorous, martial hymns that combine ritual invitation with theological reflection on Indra’s indriya (sovereign power).

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the sacred space and invoke Indra with opening praises.
  • Press Soma (or prepare an approved substitute), strain, and ready the cup for offering.

Frequently Asked Questions

It invites Indra to drink the pressed Soma, praises his unmatched power, and asks him to protect the singers and grant growth, strength, and prosperity.

In Vedic ritual, Soma is the offering that ‘gladdens’ Indra and draws his presence; the hymn uses this to request help, victory, and inspired protection (dhī).

The hymn is generally placed in the Kāṇva tradition of seers; individual verse attributions vary in manuscripts, but the family style and placement point to the Kaṇvas.
