Sukta 8.4

Rishi

Kaṇva (Kaṇva lineage; Kaṇvāḥ)

Devata

Indra

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable; needs verification)

This hymn to Indra calls the god from every direction, urging his swift arrival to the Soma-pressing and praising him as the victorious breaker of obstacles. It weaves together ritual immediacy (the Adhvaryu urged to make Soma flow) with Indra’s cosmic role as Vṛtra-slayer, concluding in imagery of abundance where even the settled powers of nature seem to “distribute” increase.

Inside Sukta 4

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Indra is summoned universally—called from every direction—affirming that no matter where he is, he hears the human invocation.

  2. Development

The hymn intensifies into ritual action: the Soma is to be made to flow because Indra thirsts; his swift approach and warlike readiness are emphasized through the image of yoked steeds and heroic epithets.

  3. Climax

Indra’s near arrival as Vṛtra-slayer, converging cosmic victory (over the coverer) with the immediate sacrificial moment (Soma offered now).

  4. Where it settles

The hymn settles into the language of increase and distribution—wealth, cattle, and horse-power—suggesting a world reordered by Indra’s presence where even nature participates in bestowing prosperity.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is lauded as the mighty, soma-loving hero who rides with the two bay steeds, answers the human call, and is famed as Vṛtra-han—the slayer of the obstructing power. • Cosmic functionBreaker of obstruction and releaser of the waters/light; champion of ṛta in the battlefield of forces, enabling fertility, rain, and victorious expansion for the community.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened force of will and luminous courage that shatters inner inertia (vṛtra), clears channels for life-energy, and turns aspiration into decisive action supported by inspired delight (Soma).

The seer

  • Kaṇva (Kaṇvāḥ)Kaṇva lineage (Kaṇva gotra) · A principal seer-family of the Rig Veda, renowned for powerful Indra hymns and for shaping the ecstatic, Soma-centered idiom of praise (stuti) that summons divine presence into the sacrifice.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is an invocation of Indra to come quickly to the Soma sacrifice, praised as the obstacle-slayer who brings victory and material increase like cattle and horses.

Because the hymn is tied to the Soma-pressing ritual: the Adhvaryu’s action of pressing and letting Soma run is the moment that draws Indra near, since Indra is said to thirst for Soma.

In Vedic language, cows and horses symbolize wealth, light, and strength; the hymn asks that Indra’s presence convert the sacrifice into tangible prosperity and sustained power for the worshipper and community.
