Agni (Jātavedas)

This hymn is an extended kindling and praise of Agni as Jātavedas—the all-knowing fire who receives offerings, protects the rite, and carries prayers to the gods. It repeatedly asks Agni for abundance (vasu), strength, and a well-ordered sacrifice, presenting him as the unseizable flame whose smoke rises as a visible sign of effective worship. The closing movement emphasizes Agni as the glory of the work and the summoner of Mitra and Varuṇa, aligning the ritual with Ṛta (cosmic order).

Inside Sukta 23

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct imperative to adore and sacrifice to Jātavedas, emphasizing Agni’s presence “facing” the worshipper and his ungraspable brilliance.

  2. Development

Agni is celebrated as vasu-vid (finder of plenitude) and as the power that makes the rite effective; the seer’s personal relationship with the fire is foregrounded through repeated kindling and requests for increase.

  3. Climax

The hymn’s strongest ritual assertion: Agni is fully kindled for “great wealth,” and his function as the decisive mediator is reaffirmed—what is offered through him becomes capable of reaching the gods.

  4. Where it settles

Agni is declared the glory of the work and is asked to bring Mitra and Varuṇa, aligning the sacrifice with Ṛta and purified action so the rite ends in order, protection, and blessing.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the bright, ever-awake household and sacrificial fire—Jātavedas, the knower of all births—whose flame cannot be seized or extinguished and whose smoke travels upward as the rite’s messenger-sign.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and gods: he conveys offerings (havis) and invocations, establishes the sacrifice, and maintains continuity between earthly action and divine response under Ṛta.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and discerning heat (tapas) in the practitioner—clarity that consumes impurity, lifts aspiration upward, and makes inner speech and intention fit for truth.

The seer

  • Vyaśva (Vaiyaśva)Vaiyaśva (descendant line of Vyaśva; a minor ṛṣi-family in the Rigvedic tradition) · Being explicitly named within the hymn as the seer who delights and kindles Agni for great wealth, highlighting a personal, ritualist voice centered on Agni as vasu-vid (finder of riches).
