Sukta 2.1
त्वमग्ने रुद्रो असुरो महो दिवस्त्वं शर्धो मारुतं पृक्ष ईशिषे । त्वं वातैररुणैर्यासि शंगयस्त्वं पूषा विधतः पासि नु त्मना ॥
tvám agne rudró ásuro mahó divás tváṃ śárdho mārutáṃ pṛkṣá īśiṣe | tváṃ vātáir aruṇáir yāsi śaṃgayás tváṃ pūṣā́ vidhatáḥ pāsi nú tmanā́ ||
Agni is Rudra, the mighty lord of the great heaven; he rules the Marut host, strong in increase. He moves with ruddy winds as a bringer of peace; he is Pūṣan, guarding the worshipper by his own power.
Agni becomes the intense purifier (Rudra) whose force can heal by confronting and burning impurity. As lord of the Maruts, he governs the storm-forces—dynamic life-energies and thought-winds that can either scatter or, when ruled, increase power (pṛkṣa). The ‘ruddy winds’ are the prāṇic currents colored by awakened energy; guided by Agni they become śaṃgaya—carriers of peace, not turbulence. As Pūṣan, Agni protects the path and the traveler: the inner guide who guards the worker (vidhataḥ) through self-force (tmanā), ensuring safe progress through difficult passages of transformation.
The same divine force that can seem fierce is also the healer and protector. When our energies are governed by the inner fire, turbulence becomes growth and peace; the path is safeguarded from within.
protection, purification, storm-forces, guidance
Bhārgava vision often integrates fierce and benevolent aspects of the divine Fire—purification (Rudra) and guidance (Pūṣan) as one continuous yogic process.
The seer shows that transformative intensity is not opposed to peace; peace is the outcome of mastered energies. This is central to inner sacrifice: purification leads to protection and guidance.
Purifier-healer; ruler of dynamic storm-forces; guide and protector of the journey.
Burns obscurity, disciplines energetic currents, converts turbulence into peace, and guards the practitioner’s path by innate divine strength.
Invocations for protection and successful passage; Agni as guardian and purifier in rites; also relevant where Rudra/Marut energies are invoked for strength and healing.

Driving and martial in the first half, resolving into a protective cadence in the last pāda.
Elicits courage to face inner purification, then settles into reassurance and guarded calm.
Invoked for protection, guidance, and the right handling of intense forces (Rudra/Maruts) in the rite and in the practitioner’s life-breath.
When seeking removal of inner/outer obstacles, protection during transitions, and mastery of turbulent forces.
Offerings with protective intent; recitation for śānti (peace) after invoking strong powers.
Use during breathwork or when emotions are stormy: invoke Agni to govern the ‘winds’ and convert agitation into calm strength.
Rudra from √rud 'cry/howl' (storm/fierce energy) but innerly the intense purifier. asura linked to √asu 'breath' indicating life-mastery. vāta 'wind' from √vā 'blow' (PIE *h₂weh₁- 'blow'). Pūṣan from √puṣ 'nourish'—guiding nourishment and protection.
tapas as purifying intensity (Rudra-function), prāṇa dynamics (vāta) under divine governance, protection of the path (Pūṣan)
Ruling the Marut-host is establishing ṛta among dynamic forces—order in movement.
Rudra as healer implies truth-force that restores wholeness after burning falsehood.
Dynamic creation through winds/forces; the divine fire governs motion and growth (pṛkṣa).
Vedic prāṇa-psychology; aligns with yogic mastery of vāyu and transformation of affect.
dawn (implied by aruṇa, ruddy)
Winds = prāṇic currents and mental motions; ruddy = awakened energy; storm-host = passions/impulses; peace-bringer = transmuted prāṇa under inner will.
Let the inner flame sit at the center; observe breath and emotion as ‘winds’; invite Agni-Rudra to purify, Agni-Marut-lord to govern, Agni-Pūṣan to protect the path.
Manipura (fire) regulating Svadhisthana (emotive/vital waves) and supporting Ajna (governance)
Ujjayi with emphasis on long exhale; optionally bhrāmarī to pacify ‘winds’; mentally repeat the third pāda to convert movement into peace.
Intense yet calm; purified energy under control.
When agitation rises, do not suppress—offer it to the fire; feel governance, then peace; end with a protective resolve: ‘by your own self-force, guard my work’.
Keep first pāda strong and lifted (Rudra aspect), second pāda energetic (Maruts), third pāda flowing (winds), final pāda protective and settled; follow udātta marks carefully.
Accentuate: rúdró, ásuro, máho, śárdhaḥ, mārútam, īśiṣe, vātáiḥ, aruṇáiḥ, śaṃgáyaḥ, pū́ṣā.
rudro: roll ‘r’ lightly; keep short u, asuro: do not pronounce like ‘a-sura’ with stress; keep even, mārutam: long ā; retroflex ṛ, aruṇaiḥ: retroflex ṇ; final ḥ audible, pūṣā: long ū; retroflex ṣ, tmanā: cluster tm-; keep t dental and m clear (tma-nā)
Start forceful and bright; soften into a protective, soothing tone by the last pāda.
