Devata

Maruts (Rudra’s storm-host; powers of dynamic force)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (11-syllable pādas; typical for Marut hymns)

Inside Sukta 64

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The poet-seer announces the deliberate crafting of a flawless hymn—words arranged like guided waters—offered to the powerful Marut host.

  2. Development

The Maruts are depicted in vivid, kinetic images: roaring like lions, radiant and perfectly formed, moving as one, armed and unstoppable, energizing the cosmos and pressing back darkness.

  3. Climax

Their collective might is shown at its peak as they strike down obstruction in a single united surge, embodying irresistible force aligned with cosmic order.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn turns to a practical boon: may the Maruts place in the worshipper stable, hero-bearing wealth and swiftly arriving inspired prosperity, especially from the early dawn.

The deity: Maruts

  • In the VedaThe Maruts are Rudra’s youthful storm-host: resplendent, well-armed, loud-roaring like lions, moving together, shaking heaven and earth, and flashing with rain, wind, and lightning. They are praised as intelligent and all-knowing (pracetasaḥ, viśvavedasaḥ), and as a united force that smites resistance.
  • Cosmic functionThey marshal atmospheric powers—wind, thunder, rain—and act as a divine troop that clears blockages, invigorates the world, and renews the rhythm of day and night, supporting the maintenance of ṛta.
  • Inner significanceThey symbolize dynamic life-force and collective will: the surge of courage, disciplined energy, and inspired clarity that breaks inner inertia, fear, and obstruction, making the mind “weather-clear” and fit for right action.

The seer

  • Nodhas (Nodha) GautamaGautama gotra · A prominent early Rigvedic seer of the Gautama line, especially noted for powerful Marut and Indra hymns marked by vivid storm imagery and meticulous, “well-fashioned” diction (suvṛkti).
