Adhyaya 47: The Rite of Śrāvaṇa Bright-Fortnight Dvādaśī (Dāmodara Worship) and the Exemplum of King Nṛga

Śrāvaṇa-śukla-dvādaśīvrata-vidhiḥ (Dāmodara-pūjā) tathā Nṛga-rāja-upākhyānam

Ritual-Manual and Didactic Narrative (Vrata-Māhātmya)

Shlokas in Adhyaya 47

Verse 1

Verse 18

Inside Adhyaya 47

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Varāha instructs Pṛthivī in a vrata framed as received tradition: Durvāsas transmits the observance, and Vāmadeva’s āśrama-lineage functions as an authoritative setting for correct procedure.

  2. Central event

Prescription of the Śrāvaṇa śukla-dvādaśī Dāmodara-worship: limb-wise name-assignment (aṅga-nyāsa style) to Viṣṇu, kumbha installation, cloth placement, and concluding dāna to a Veda-versed brāhmaṇa; the ritual is then validated by a māhātmya exemplum.

  3. Climax resolution

Narrative proof peaks when King Nṛga, endangered in a ghoravana by mleccha/dasyu attackers, is saved by a goddess-like protective manifestation who slays the assailants; the rescue is explicitly explained as the fruit of having observed Śrāvaṇa-dvādaśī in a prior context, resolving the crisis and establishing the vrata’s apad-rakṣā power.

  4. Closing phalashruti

Implied phala: protection in calamity, stabilization of life amid hostile environments, and merit amplified through disciplined fasting/niyama plus socially responsible gifting to a learned brāhmaṇa.

Geographical context

Ghora-vana (dangerous forest); Vāmadevāśrama (hermitage of Vāmadeva).

Tirtha focus

  • Pilgrimage MeritNot a tirtha-māhātmya chapter; merit is primarily vrata-based, with āśrama-space functioning as a sanctifying locus for correct observance and transmission.

Ritual instructions

  • Primary RitualŚrāvaṇa māsa śukla-pakṣa Dvādaśī vrata: Dāmodara/Viṣṇu-pūjā with aṅga-nyāsa-style nāma-vinyāsa, kumbha-sthāpana, vastra-arpana, and brāhmaṇa-dāna.
  • BenefitVrata-māhātmya emphasizes apad-rakṣā (protection in crisis), accumulation of puṇya through disciplined observance, and moral order reinforced by dāna to learned custodians of śruti-smṛti.

The narrative frame

  • Varāha (teaching voice; with Durvāsas and Vāmadeva cited as authoritative transmitters within the tradition)Pṛthivī · Instructional and prescriptive (vrata-manual tone) followed by confirmatory exemplum (māhātmya) to secure faith in practice.

The emotional journey

  • Dominant RasaŚānta with Vīra-adbhuta inflection
  • Emotional ProgressionCalm procedural instruction → heightened tension in the ghoravana crisis → awe and relief at the goddess-like intervention → settled confidence in the vrata’s protective efficacy and the stabilizing role of dāna.

Planning a pilgrimage

  • Visit FeasibilityText does not mandate a specific tirtha; practice is home/temple-feasible. If desired, observe in a Viṣṇu temple setting or an āśrama-associated shrine to mirror the Vāmadeva-āśrama authority motif.
  • Best SeasonŚrāvaṇa māsa (monsoon season; timing governed by lunar calendar for śukla Dvādaśī).

Frequently Asked Questions

The text links disciplined observance (niyama and upavāsa) with social duty (dāna to a learned brāhmaṇa) and frames ritual practice as a stabilizing force during crisis (apad-rakṣā), illustrated through a narrative where protective power intervenes against violence in a forest setting.

The observance is specified for Śrāvaṇa māsa during the śukla-pakṣa on dvādaśī (the 12th lunar day of the bright fortnight).

While not a direct ecological treatise, the chapter situates moral order within a hazardous forest ecology (ghora-vana with predators and bandits), implying that disciplined conduct and protective governance reduce harm in vulnerable landscapes—an indirect model of maintaining terrestrial safety and stability within the Varāha–Pṛthivī didactic horizon.

Durvāsas (sage authority), Vāmadeva (ṛṣi with an āśrama), and King Nṛga (royal figure used for exemplum). Social categories appear via references to a prior śūdra birth and to mleccha/dasyu attackers as cultural outsiders in the narrative.
