Agastya’s Vision of Varuṇa as Nārāyaṇa in Ilāvṛta
itthaṁbhūtaṁ kathaṁ loko bhavāṁś cetthaṁ vyavasthitaḥ | kathayasvaitasya hetuṁ me kaś ca tvaṁ munipuṁgava || 69.33 ||
It exemplifies a standard Purāṇic pedagogical method: an inquirer asks for causes (hetu) and identity, prompting an explanatory discourse that frames subsequent narrative and instruction.
No geographic location is named in this verse; it functions as a transition into explanation rather than a site-description passage.
The verse foregrounds disciplined inquiry—requesting reasons and clarification of authority—an epistemic ethic that supports careful transmission and interpretation of cultural knowledge.
