Devata

Soma Pavamāna (with Indra as primary Soma-drinker)

This short Pavamāna hymn urges Soma (Indu) to purify himself through the filter and flow as the intoxicating, insight-giving delight that summons the gods. The verses emphasize Soma’s forward surge beyond the strainer, his being drunk especially by Indra, and the resulting expansion of vision and heroic power for the worshippers’ chant.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Purify yourself, O Indu, for the ecstasy that awakens; O seer of men, for the gods’ glad coming—flow for Indra to drink, so the lord of luminous force may be empowered in us.

Mantra 2

Flow for us into the work of the messenger: you delight Indra; bring near the gods as friends, and draw down the chosen boon into our companionship with the divine.

Mantra 3

And you, the ruddy-flaming one, we anoint with rays of light for the ecstasy; open out for us the doors of spiritual richness, widen the passages by which the plenty enters.

Mantra 4

He has overstepped the filter; like a strong racer taking the yoke on the course, Indu presses forward and wins lordship among the gods—establishing mastery of the purified delight in the luminous powers.

Mantra 5

Together the comrades sounded forth, hailing the Indu in the inner forest—him who plays beyond the sheep-like tamas; as boats they bore him onward (over the currents of becoming).

Mantra 6

Flow purified by that stream by which, when drunk, thou becomest the wide-seeing; O Indu, bring into the hymn the plenitude of heroic force.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn praises Soma as Pavamāna (the self-purifying Soma/Indu) as he flows through the filter; Indra is highlighted as the chief one who drinks Soma.

Pavamāna means “purifying” or “being purified,” referring to Soma as he is strained through the pavitra in the Soma ritual to become fit for offering and divine drinking.

It asks Soma to bring ecstatic inspiration and, when drunk, wide-seeing clarity, and to grant su-vīrya—strong heroic power—into the worshippers’ hymn and life.
