Soma Pavamāna
This short Pavamāna Soma hymn celebrates Soma as he is purified in the filter, compared to a swift steed cleansed by the radiant “cows” (rays) and then adorned by the poets’ hymns. It asks the bright Indu to bring splendid wealth (rayi), many-radianced brilliance, and to empower the chanting seer with victorious strength and noble hero-energy (suvīrya).
Mantra 1
He who is cleansed like a swift steed by the rays of illumination for the ecstasy, the golden-hued one—him we clothe and make radiant with our inspired hymns.
Mantra 2
Him for us, all our seeking inspirations adorn as in the ancient way—this bright drop (Indu) for Indra to drink, that the lord of luminous power may grow in us.
Mantra 3
Self-purifying, the golden Soma goes forward, made perfectly ready by hymns, in the work of the seer who is the fit guest of the sacrifice and the intelligence.
Mantra 4
O self-purifying Soma, find and bring for us the rayi—beautiful in its true splendor; O Indu, a wealth of a thousand radiances.
Mantra 5
Indu, like a racing steed that brings the plenitude, keeps leaping into the purifier, when the god-seeking one streams forth and passes beyond.
Mantra 6
Purify yourself for the winning of plenitude, for the increase of the seer who chants; O Soma, give us noble hero-power—an effective strength of the soul.
The deity is Soma Pavamāna—Soma as he flows through the filter in the Soma sacrifice, becoming purified, bright, and fit to be offered.
It asks for splendid wealth (rayi), great radiance (sahasravarcas), success in winning strength and plenty (vājasāti), and noble inner power (suvīrya).
Because the ritual purification is like grooming a fast steed: Soma is ‘cleaned’ by the bright rays and then ‘adorned’ by hymns, showing both physical filtering and inner illumination.
