Sukta 9.42
Soma Pavamāna (Hari)
This short Pavamāna Soma hymn praises the tawny Soma as he is pressed and purified through the filter, described as generating the luminous spaces of heaven and even the sun “in the waters.” It links the ritual act of straining Soma with a cosmic act of illumination and life-giving flow, and ends by asking Soma to purify himself for the sacrificers and bestow expansive nourishment, cattle, heroes, horses, and strength.
Mantra 1
Bringing to birth the luminous spaces of heaven, bringing to birth the Sun in the waters, the tawny one moves clothed in the rays (cows) and the waters—illumination wrapped in life-streams.
Mantra 2
This one, with the ancient intention, a god moving around the gods, flows in a sustaining stream—Soma pressed out—circling and serving the divine powers within us.
Mantra 3
For the ever-growing swift force within, the Soma-streams purify themselves, moving toward the winning of plenitude; these are the Somas of a thousand powers of light.
Mantra 4
Milking out the ancient sweetness indeed, he is poured all around into the purifier; crying out, he awakens and brings forth the gods within.
Mantra 5
Over all desirable fulfillments, over the gods who grow by the Truth, Soma—self-purifying—streams onward.
Mantra 6
O Soma, pressed out, purify yourself for us as fullness of luminous riches—rich in rays of knowledge, rich in heroic energy, rich in swift powers, rich in plenitude of force; pour out the vast impulsions of nourishment.
The deity is Soma Pavamāna—Soma as the pressed and purified sacred drink, praised while it flows through the filter (pavitra).
It links the ritual purification of Soma with cosmic illumination: Soma is described as generating heavenly light and even the sun in the waters, and then is asked to grant prosperity and strength.
Because the verses accompany the Soma-pressing rite: Soma juice is extracted and strained through a woolen sieve, and this physical purification is poetically treated as a spiritual and cosmic cleansing that empowers gods and people.
