Sukta 9.39
Soma Pavamāna (the purifying Soma)
This short Pavamāna hymn celebrates Soma as the swift, self-luminous stream that is purified through the filter and carried to the divine plane where the gods affirm the eternal Reality. It depicts Soma’s descent and outpouring like a mighty river-wave, and culminates in his enthronement in the ‘womb of Ṛta’—the ordered truth that sustains sacrifice and cosmos.
Mantra 1
O swift-flowing Soma, stream forth around the vast-minded Truth, by the beloved law of thy own luminous dwelling, to that plane where the gods affirm the eternal ‘It is’.
Mantra 2
Perfecting what is yet unperfected for the human being, driving forward the impulsions of our seeking, flow around us as the rain of heaven—an outpouring of the higher Light.
Mantra 3
Pressed out, he comes to the purifier, taking on brilliance by his power; he sees with a discerning vision and makes the inner worlds shine.
Mantra 4
This is he who, swift in his courses, comes from beyond heaven to the purifier; like a wave of the great river he pours himself out and spreads.
Mantra 5
He has been made to shine forth from the far and also from the near; pressed out, the honeyed delight is poured for Indra—the force that conquers in us.
Mantra 6
The rightly-directed powers chant to him; they impel the tawny one with the pressing-stones: sit in the womb of the Truth, in the ordered seat of the rite within us.
The hymn praises Soma Pavamāna—Soma as the juice that is pressed, purified through the filter, and offered to the gods.
It points to Soma reaching the plane of affirmed Reality—truth (sat/ṛta) recognized by the gods—showing that purification leads toward the highest order and certainty.
It is the ordered seat of truth: ritually, the properly established sacrifice; inwardly, a stable, disciplined consciousness where purified energy can dwell.
