Sukta 9.31
Soma Pavamāna
This short Pavamāna hymn praises Soma as he “goes forth” in the act of purification, moving as living streams that bring awakened, conscious wealth (cetaná rayí). It asks Soma to swell with gathered strength from all sides and to be present at the assembly of vāja (victorious force), culminating in a prayer for Indu’s friendship as the lord who upholds becoming and the worlds.
Mantra 1
Forth go the self-mastered Somās, the purifying streams; they advance and make for us a wealth that is conscious—richness that awakens the being.
Mantra 2
Be over heaven and earth, O Indu—an increaser of luminous power; become the lord of the plenitudes of force that win the soul’s advance.
Mantra 3
To you the winds move in glad attraction; to you the rivers flow—O Soma; they increase your greatness, the vastness of your effective being.
Mantra 4
Grow full, O Soma; let your virile strength gather to you from every side. Become present in the meeting-place of the plenitude of force.
Mantra 5
For you the cows of light milk out ghee and milk—O tawny one—an inexhaustible abundance, upon the most raining summit of the being.
Mantra 6
We desire friendship with you, O Indu—lord of becoming—who are real and armed with your own power: be our ally in the work of the worlds within us.
Soma Pavamāna is Soma “while being purified”—the pressed juice flowing through the filter, praised as a living, luminous power that strengthens and inspires.
The hymn asks Soma to bring rayi (wealth, abundance) that is cetanā—awakening and intelligent—so prosperity also becomes clarity, energy, and right capacity in life.
Calling Indu a friend means seeking an ongoing inner and outer alliance: protection, strength, and guidance from the purified divine essence that supports the worlds and the worshipper’s work.
