Sukta 58

Mantra 1

प्र साकमुक्षे अर्चता गणाय यो दैव्यस्य धाम्नस्तुविष्मान् । उत क्षोदन्ति रोदसी महित्वा नक्षन्ते नाकं निॠतेरवंशात् ॥

Sing forth together to the strong, united troop, mighty in the divine dwelling. By their greatness they impel the two worlds, and they reach the heaven, escaping the portion of dissolution.

Mantra 2

जनूश्चिद्वो मरुतस्त्वेष्येण भीमासस्तुविमन्यवोऽयासः । प्र ये महोभिरोजसोत सन्ति विश्वो वो यामन्भयते स्वर्दृक् ॥

Even your knees, O Maruts, are formidable with your blazing energy—terrible, of vast ardour, never weary. When you go forth with greatness and strength, all who behold the light fear your march.

Mantra 3

बृहद्वयो मघवद्भ्यो दधात जुजोषन्निन्मरुतः सुष्टुतिं नः । गतो नाध्वा वि तिराति जन्तुं प्र णः स्पार्हाभिरूतिभिस्तिरेत ॥

Bestow a vast strengthening to the bounteous; O Maruts, take delight in our well-made praise. As a path clears the traveller’s way, so with your desirable helps carry us across and beyond.

Mantra 4

युष्मोतो विप्रो मरुतः शतस्वी युष्मोतो अर्वा सहुरिः सहस्री । युष्मोतः सम्राळुत हन्ति वृत्रं प्र तद्वो अस्तु धूतयो देष्णम् ॥

O Maruts, by your fostering power the seer becomes rich in hundreds; by your fostering power the swift steed becomes a thousand-strong in force. By your fostering power the sovereign energy even smites Vṛtra, the obstructer. Let that be for you, O Shakers, a forward-going gift to us—an allotment of your power.

Mantra 5

ताँ आ रुद्रस्य मीळ्हुषो विवासे कुविन्नंसन्ते मरुतः पुनर्नः । यत्सस्वर्ता जिहीळिरे यदाविरव तदेन ईमहे तुराणाम् ॥

Those Maruts, the bountiful of Rudra, I seek to draw near with my service—will they not bend again toward us? When their self-sounding energies blaze forth, when they become manifest, then we pray that the swift ones may carry down and away that fault within us.

Mantra 6

प्र सा वाचि सुष्टुतिर्मघोनामिदं सूक्तं मरुतो जुषन्त । आराच्चिद्द्वेषो वृषणो युयोत यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥

Forward in the word goes this well-shaped praise of the givers; may the Maruts take delight in this hymn. Drive far away even the hatred, O strong ones; and you—guard us always with your widenesses of well-being.
