Vasiṣṭha (Vāsiṣṭha family, Mandala 7)

This six-verse hymn of Vasiṣṭha propels the Soma-sacrifice forward by invoking the Angiras-like ritual powers, the flowing “cows” of Soma, and the pressing-stones, so that the work (peśaḥ) of the adhvara is successfully set in motion. Agni is praised as the welcomed divine Guest (atithi) who, when rightly recognized and installed in the home/ritual space, grants desirable riches and safe progress. The hymn closes with a compact phala-śruti-like prayer for widened vitality (iṣ), wealth (rayi), strength (vāja), and enduring protection through svasti.
Mantra 1
प्र ब्रह्माणो अङ्गिरसो नक्षन्त प्र क्रन्दनुर्नभन्यस्य वेतु । प्र धेनव उदप्रुतो नवन्त युज्यातामद्री अध्वरस्य पेशः ॥
Forward may the sacred utterances and the Angiras powers move to their goal; forward let the cry of Nabhan-yu go forth. Forward let the streaming milch-cows flow; let the pressing-stones be yoked to the skilled work of the sacrifice.
Mantra 2
सुगस्ते अग्ने सनवित्तो अध्वा युक्ष्वा सुते हरितो रोहितश्च । ये वा सद्मन्नरुषा वीरवाहो हुवे देवानां जनिमानि सत्तः ॥
Fair is your path, O Agni, the way that wins the treasure. Yoke, at the pressing, the tawny and the ruddy powers. Whether those ruddy ones are in the home, bearers of heroic force—I call, as one seated in the rite, the births and manifestations of the gods.
Mantra 3
समु वो यज्ञं महयन्नमोभिः प्र होता मन्द्रो रिरिच उपाके । यजस्व सु पुर्वणीक देवाना यज्ञियामरमतिं ववृत्याः ॥
In harmony I magnify your sacrifice with acts of reverence; the glad Hotar has been set forth near at hand. Sacrifice well to the gods of the ancient face; turn away the non-right mind, and establish the mind that is fit for the sacrifice.
Mantra 4
यदा वीरस्य रेवतो दुरोणे स्योनशीरतिथिराचिकेतत् । सुप्रीतो अग्निः सुधितो दम आ स विशे दाति वार्यमियत्यै ॥
When, in the house of the strong and affluent one, the guest who brings a happy dwelling is recognized, then Agni—well-pleased, well-set in the home—gives to the people the desirable riches for their advancing journey.
Mantra 5
इमं नो अग्ने अध्वरं जुषस्व मरुत्स्विन्द्रे यशसं कृधी नः । आ नक्ता बर्हिः सदतामुषासोशन्ता मित्रावरुणा यजेह ॥
Accept for us, O Agni, this unbroken offering; among the Maruts and with Indra make it for us full of glory. Let Night and Dawn sit upon the sacred seat; worship here Mitra and Varuṇa, the two who desire the right order.
Mantra 6
एवाग्निं सहस्यं वसिष्ठो रायस्कामो विश्वप्स्न्यस्य स्तौत् । इषं रयिं पप्रथद्वाजमस्मे यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
Thus Vasiṣṭha, desiring the fullness of being, has praised Agni the puissant, the one of all-effective workings. May he widen for us the impulsion and the inner riches, and the plenitude of force; you Powers, guard us always with your harmonies of well-being.
It is a short hymn that energizes the Soma-sacrifice: it urges the mantras, pressing-stones, and Soma flow forward, and it praises Agni as the divine Guest who rewards the community when properly welcomed.
“Angiras” here points to priestly/ritual power—effective inspired speech and sacrificial force—invoked to help the rite reach its goal and make the offerings successful.
It asks for widened vitality (iṣ), wealth (rayi), strength or winning power (vāja), and continual protection through svasti (harmonious well-being).
