Sukta 6.71
Bharadvāja (Bārhaspatya)
Savitṛ (Savitar)
Triṣṭubh
This six-verse hymn praises Savitṛ as the divine Impeller who rises and stretches out his golden arms, setting the cosmic order in motion across the realms. It asks him to anoint and empower the sacrifice, to bestow prosperity on the generous worshipper, and to grant “the desirable” day after day through inspired thought and right intention.
Mantra 1
Up rises that god Savitar; with golden arms he has stretched them out for the pressing, the one of luminous will. With ghṛta he moistens his hands; youthful in power, perfectly skilled, he establishes the law in the wide spaces of the worlds.
Mantra 2
May we be in the best impulsion of the god Savitar, in the giving of his riches. For you are the vast one who presides over the settling and the sending-forth of all that is two-footed and four-footed.
Mantra 3
O Savitar, with your unfailing guardians, with your benevolent protections, today encompass and guard our life-force. O golden-tongued one, for a new and luminous well-being, protect us—let no ill-wisher gain mastery over us.
Mantra 4
Up rises that god Savitar, the dweller in the home; with golden hands he stands at every dusk. With iron jaw, adorable, with a rapturous tongue, he impels toward the giver abundant felicities.
Mantra 5
Upward he has extended his arms, like one who urges and directs the work; Savitṛ, golden in his forming power and fair in manifestation. He climbs the ascents of heaven from the wideness of earth; he sets all in right motion, flying even through the vast unknown.
Mantra 6
The desirable good today, O Savitṛ; the desirable good tomorrow; day by day do thou impel for us the desirable. For of that abundant dwelling of delight, O god, may we become sharers by this going of thought and will.
Savitṛ is the divine “Impeller” who sets things in motion—sun’s course, life’s activity, and the sacrifice. The hymn describes him with golden arms and hands that consecrate and energize the rite.
It repeatedly asks for vāmá—“the desirable good”: prosperity, well-being, and a secure share in Savitṛ’s abundant dwelling of delight, today and every day.
They are transition points when Savitṛ is invoked as the power that ‘turns on’ right movement and right order. The hymn explicitly places him at dusk and also portrays his rising, making it suitable for liminal ritual moments.
