Sukta 6.6
Agni
This hymn invokes Agni, the “Son of Strength,” as the divine Hotar who opens the path for worship and leads the sacrificer through darkness into luminous order. Agni is praised as a radiant, purifying power whose energies “plough” and prepare the earthly field, driving the rite forward and expanding its light. The sukta culminates in a request for inner awakening (citra-citayantam) and for shining, heroic wealth and protection for the singer and community.
Mantra 1
Forward with a newer offering he goes to the Son of Force, seeking by sacrifice the path and the help. He reaches the divine Hotar of the welcoming—shining, cutting through the thicket, moving through the blackness of night.
Mantra 2
He spreads out, thundering, established in the luminous spaces, the youngest, with his unaging, resounding powers. This Agni, the Purifier, most abundant, follows after the many wide realms, bearing and supporting the onward movement.
Mantra 3
O Agni, pure and luminous, your flame-powers driven by the breath move everywhere. Vast in their shining, divine like the Navagvas, they win for us the forests of concealment, boldly breaking them open.
Mantra 4
Those bright and pure powers of yours, O flame of purity—like steeds well-reined—plough the earth of our nature. Then your wide-ranging turning radiance shines out, moving on the ridge of the dappled one, guiding and driving forward the journey.
Mantra 5
Then the tongue of the Fire leaps forward—like a thunderbolt loosed by the strong warrior in the battle for the Rays. Like the onset of a hero is the spreading dominion of Agni; formidable, hard to turn back, it cleaves the forests of obstruction.
Mantra 6
With your ray you have stretched out, boldly, the earthly growths by the great goad. Therefore, with your powers drive away the fears; seeking the victory, wear down the hostile strivers and bring them to exhaustion.
Mantra 7
O wondrous One, awaken in us the wondrous seeing; O Lord of varied powers, most marvellous, foundation of plenitudes. Give to the singer a shining wealth, vast and full of many heroic energies—O luminous Agni, foster us with your luminous lights.
It praises Agni as the priestly fire who opens the right path for worship, removes darkness and obstacles, and brings both inner clarity and outward prosperity.
Because Agni functions as the priest who receives offerings and conveys them to the gods; the hymn emphasizes him as the guide and effective doer of the sacrifice.
It is a prayer for awakened perception and inspired intelligence—an inner illumination that matches Agni’s outer flame, leading to strength, protection, and success.
