Devata

Indra and Pūṣan (dual invocation)

Chandas

Gāyatrī (likely, given brevity; exact confirmation requires syllable count)

This short hymn invokes Indra and Pūṣan together as friendly allies who secure svasti (safe well-being) and vājasāti (the winning of strength, plenty, and success). It recalls Indra’s r̥ta-governed release and leading of the great waters, with Pūṣan accompanying as guide, and ends by “rousing” Pūṣan like a charioteer tightening reins—so the journey moves straight and safely.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Indra and Pūṣan—now we call you for comradeship and for well-being, for the winning of plenitude of force (vāja).

Mantra 2

One approaches the Soma to drink the pressed delight from the cup; another seeks the karambha—so different are the movements in us: some reach for the ecstasy, others for mixed nourishment.

Mantra 3

The unyoking-forces (ajāḥ) are for one Power; the two steeds of luminous energy (harī) are marshalled for another. By these two, the coverings of obstruction (vṛtrāṇi) are struck down—so the path for the Truth’s advance is cleared within us.

Mantra 4

When Indra, most puissant in the outpouring, led forth the vast waters by the law of Truth (R̥ta), there Pūṣan was with him—companioning the movement, guiding it into right courses within the being.

Mantra 5

That luminous right-mindedness of Pūṣan we would lay hold of, as one takes firm support upon a tree’s spreading strength; and we would also seize the might of Indra—so our ascent is secure and victorious.

Mantra 6

We rouse Pūṣan upward, as a charioteer tightens the reins; and (we rouse) Indra for our wide good-being—so the journey of consciousness moves straight and safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Indra provides the power to overcome obstacles and win abundance, while Pūṣan protects the path and keeps movement in the right direction. Together they represent strength plus guidance, leading to svasti (safe well-being).

Svasti means safe welfare—protection, auspiciousness, and a smooth course free from harm. In this hymn it is both outer safety (life and travel) and inner steadiness of direction.

It suggests controlled, well-guided movement. Pūṣan is invoked to keep the ‘reins’ of one’s journey—outer or inner—steady, while Indra is called to supply the force that carries one forward successfully.
