Devata

Agni

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable; requires metrical confirmation)

This short Agni-hymn teaches that the mortal who serves Agni with true intention and inspired thought is made radiant and is advanced in strength, food-plenty, and protection. Agni is praised as the ancient power who grants a steadfast, assault-enduring hero and as the mediator who can “speak for us” to the other gods. The hymn culminates in a repeated prayer to be led to welfare and good dwelling, and to cross beyond hatred, distress, and wrong paths by Agni’s aid.

Mantras

Mantra 1

The mortal who, for Agni, offers service and increases the thought with inspired insights—he indeed shines forth; that ancient Power then brings forward the impulsion of plenitude for his help and fostering.

Mantra 2

Agni indeed is the one of awakened consciousness; Agni is the most accomplished knower, the seer. Agni as the Invoker-priest is adored by the human peoples in their sacrifices.

Mantra 3

Various indeed, O Agni, are the strivings of the Arya for thy help and for the plenitudes: pressing upon the Dasyu forces, the seekers by the law of the rite discipline the lawless.

Mantra 4

Agni gives a hero who can endure the assaults, a true lord of the being; before whose force the adversaries tremble, seen together in fear.

Mantra 5

Agni indeed, by his knowledge, protects the mortal from hostile negations; with him as companion, for whom the plenitude is unclosed—his wealth of force is unclosed in the victories.

Mantra 6

Speak for us, O god Agni of friendly greatness, to the gods, bringing the good mind of Heaven and Earth. Lead us to well-being and a fair dwelling, to the shining powers of the heights; may we cross beyond hatreds, constrictions and wrong paths—yes, cross them by thy help, cross them by thy help.
