Sukta 10

Mantra 1

पुरो वो मन्द्रं दिव्यं सुवृक्तिं प्रयति यज्ञे अग्निमध्वरे दधिध्वम् । पुर उक्थेभिः स हि नो विभावा स्वध्वरा करति जातवेदाः ॥

Set Agni in front for your forward-moving sacrifice—him, the rapturous, divine, well-uttered power in the rite. For he, the all-illumining, goes before us with the hymns and makes our journey of offering a good and unbroken path—Jātavedas.

Mantra 2

तमु द्युमः पुर्वणीक होतरग्ने अग्निभिर्मनुष इधानः । स्तोमं यमस्मै ममतेव शूषं घृतं न शुचि मतयः पवन्ते ॥

That Agni, O Hotṛ, rich in light and of many faces, is kindled by men with their fires. To him the hymn flows—like a beloved one’s ardor—pure as clarified butter; our thoughts stream bright and cleansing.

Mantra 3

पीपाय स श्रवसा मर्त्येषु यो अग्नये ददाश विप्र उक्थैः । चित्राभिस्तमूतिभिश्चित्रशोचिर्व्रजस्य साता गोमतो दधाति ॥

He grows in luminous fame among mortals who gives to Agni—who, as the inspired one, offers him by hymns. The many-flaming One, by his varied helps, establishes for him the winning of the luminous herds: the plenitude of rays (knowledge).

Mantra 4

आ यः पप्रौ जायमान उर्वी दूरेदृशा भासा कृष्णाध्वा । अध बहु चित्तम ऊर्म्यायास्तिरः शोचिषा ददृशे पावकः ॥

He who, being born, spread wide across the vast, seen from afar by his radiance, making a dark path into a way of light—then even much darkness, across the wave of it, the Purifier was seen by his flame.

Mantra 5

नू नश्चित्रं पुरुवाजाभिरूती अग्ने रयिं मघवद्भ्यश्च धेहि । ये राधसा श्रवसा चात्यन्यान्त्सुवीर्येभिश्चाभि सन्ति जनान् ॥

Now, O Agni, set in us a shining plenitude—by thy many powers of force and thy protecting help—this inner wealth for us and for the givers. They who, by abundance and by inspired fame, surpass the others, and by heroic energies stand above the peoples.

Mantra 6

इमं यज्ञं चनो धा अग्न उशन्यं त आसानो जुहुते हविष्मान् । भरद्वाजेषु दधिषे सुवृक्तिमवीर्वाजस्य गध्यस्य सातौ ॥

Establish for us this sacrifice as thy delight, O Agni; the offerer, seated in the rite, pours the oblation. Among the Bharadvājas thou settest the well-fashioned word; thou hast helped us in the winning of the plenitude and its firm attainment.

Mantra 7

वि द्वेषांसीनुहि वर्धयेळां मदेम शतहिमाः सुवीराः ॥

Drive out the hatreds; increase the illumined richness (iḷā). May we grow glad in the divine rapture—strong to endure a hundred winters—possessing noble hero-powers.
