Sukta 5.82
Savitṛ (with Bhaga invoked as his power of felicity/distribution)
This hymn is a prayer to Savitṛ, the divine Impeller, to bestow the choicest nourishment, right movement, and auspicious destiny, with Bhaga invoked as Savitṛ’s power of allotment and felicity. It asks that all misdirections (duritāni) be driven away and that what is truly good (bhadram) be impelled into the worshippers. The sukta also praises Savitṛ as the cosmic force who brings all beings and births into manifestation and makes them “heard” through inspired speech.
Mantra 1
That we choose of Savitṛ for ourselves—the god’s nourishing enjoyment: the best, the all-sustaining, the swift and puissant plenitude of Bhaga; on that we set our thought.
Mantra 2
For of Savitṛ, the self-glorious, whatever is dear—none diminish it; his self-rule, his sovereign inner kingdom, suffers no violation.
Mantra 4
Today, O god Savitṛ, impel for us a felicity rich in progeny and growth; drive far away the evil dream that clouds the inner seeing.
Mantra 5
All mis-movements and wrong turnings, O god Savitṛ, impel away from us; and whatever is the good, that do thou impel into us and establish.
Mantra 8
He who goes before these two Days, unwearied and unbroken in his advance—Savitṛ the god, of self-lawed intelligence.
Mantra 9
He who makes all these births and becomings heard by the inspired word, and who impels them forward into manifestation—Savitṛ.
Savitṛ is the divine “Impeller”—the power that awakens life and thought, sets things in right motion, and guides beings toward what is beneficial and true.
Bhaga represents the power of fortunate allotment—prosperity, share, and felicity—so the hymn asks Savitṛ to distribute the best portion of well-being and support.
It asks Savitṛ to drive away all wrong turnings (duritāni) and to impel and establish whatever is truly good (bhadram) in the worshippers’ lives.
