This short hymn to Mitra–Varuṇa asks for inspired speech and right guidance from the Ādityas who uphold ṛta (cosmic order). It praises Mitra’s power to open a “wide path” out of distress and petitions the divine pair to unite and lead the people, protecting the seers and patrons within a secure enclosure.

Mantra 1

यश्चिकेत स सुक्रतुर्देवत्रा स ब्रवीतु नः । वरुणो यस्य दर्शतो मित्रो वा वनते गिरः ॥

Whoever truly knows, let that one of bright will speak to us in the godward way: he whose vision is Varuṇa, or Mitra who wins our inspired words.

Mantra 2

ता हि श्रेष्ठवर्चसा राजाना दीर्घश्रुत्तमा । ता सत्पती ऋतावृध ऋतावाना जनेजने ॥

For those two are kings of the most excellent radiance, of far-reaching hearing; those two are lords of the true, increasers of the cosmic order, possessors of ṛta in every people and in every being.

Mantra 3

ता वामियानोऽवसे पूर्वा उप ब्रुवे सचा । स्वश्वासः सु चेतुना वाजाँ अभि प्र दावने ॥

To you two, seeking for help, I speak near as to the first-born powers, in companionship: with good horses and luminous discernment, press forward toward the givings of plenitude of force.

Mantra 4

मित्रो अंहोश्चिदादुरु क्षयाय गातुं वनते । मित्रस्य हि प्रतूर्वतः सुमतिरस्ति विधतः ॥

Mitra, even from distress, wins a wide passage for the dwelling; for Mitra, overcoming opposition, has the good mind for the one who serves and orders the work.

Mantra 5

वयं मित्रस्यावसि स्याम सप्रथस्तमे । अनेहसस्त्वोतयः सत्रा वरुणशेषसः ॥

May we abide in the protecting grace of Mitra, in the widest and most expansive help. Unwearying, may your succours be with us always, O you who leave nothing undone in Varuṇa’s guardianship.

Mantra 6

युवं मित्रेमं जनं यतथः सं च नयथः । मा मघोनः परि ख्यतं मो अस्माकमृषीणां गोपीथे न उरुष्यतम् ॥

You two, O Mitra and Varuṇa, guide this people and lead them into a united movement. Do not stand apart from the givers of the plenitude; guard us—our seers—in the cow-pen of protection, and make us wide and safe.
