Sukta 64

Mantra 1

वरुणं वो रिशादसमृचा मित्रं हवामहे । परि व्रजेव बाह्वोर्जगन्वांसा स्वर्णरम् ॥

With the inspired hymn we call Varuṇa, the smiter of harm, and Mitra. Like a pen encircling and holding, they encompass with their arms the luminous man—so that our being may be guarded in the wideness of heaven-light.

Mantra 2

ता बाहवा सुचेतुना प्र यन्तमस्मा अर्चते । शेवं हि जार्यं वां विश्वासु क्षासु जोगुवे ॥

Those two mighty Powers, moving forward with luminous discernment, are hymned by him. For your enduring benediction is a sure help to the seeker in all abodes and fields of life.

Mantra 3

यन्नूनमश्यां गतिं मित्रस्य यायां पथा । अस्य प्रियस्य शर्मण्यहिंसानस्य सश्चिरे ॥

May we now attain the going and the path of Mitra, and move in the shelter of this beloved Power who does not wound; so may we accompany his peace.

Mantra 4

युवाभ्यां मित्रावरुणोपमं धेयामृचा । यद्ध क्षये मघोनां स्तोतॄणां च स्पूर्धसे ॥

To you two, Mitra and Varuṇa, may I set a hymn of fitting measure; for in the dwelling you strive on behalf of the bounteous and of the singers.

Mantra 5

आ नो मित्र सुदीतिभिर्वरुणश्च सधस्थ आ । स्वे क्षये मघोनां सखीनां च वृधसे ॥

Come to us, O Mitra, with your bright inspirations, and Varuṇa as well, to the common seat; in your own dwelling may you increase the bounteous and the comrades of the path.

Mantra 6

युवं नो येषु वरुण क्षत्रं बृहच्च बिभृथः । उरु णो वाजसातये कृतं राये स्वस्तये ॥

You two, O Varuṇa, uphold for us a wide and lofty sovereign power; make for us a vast field for the winning of plenitude of force, for richness of being and for true well-being.

Mantra 7

उच्छन्त्यां मे यजता देवक्षत्रे रुशद्गवि । सुतं सोमं न हस्तिभिरा पड्भिर्धावतं नरा बिभ्रतावर्चनानसम् ॥

At the rising of my offering-flame, O adorable ones with divine sovereignty and shining herds of light, run here on swift courses, as if with powerful hands, to the pressed Soma; O two heroic Powers, bearing the delight of the chant.
