Sukta 4.49
Vāmadeva Gautama (traditional for RV 4.49)
Indra-Bṛhaspati (dual)
Triṣṭubh (probable; requires confirmation)
This short hymn invites the twin powers Indra and Bṛhaspati to receive the offered oblation and Soma, and to be pleased by the uktha (solemn praise) and joy (mada) of the sacrificer. It asks the divine pair to establish themselves in the giver’s home and to bestow a rich, expansive rayi—prosperity and victorious increase—expressed through horses, abundance, and “hundredfold” growth.
Mantra 1
This is the dear offering set for your mouths, O Indra and Bṛhaspati; and the uplifted hymn and the ecstasy are being proclaimed.
Mantra 2
This Soma is being poured all around for you two, O Indra and Bṛhaspati—delightful for the ecstasy of the uplifted consciousness, to be drunk inwardly.
Mantra 3
Come to us, O Indra and Bṛhaspati; come to the home of our being—O Indra too—drinkers of Soma, for the drinking of Soma within.
Mantra 4
In us, O Indra and Bṛhaspati, place the plenitude of being—abounding in a hundred impulses of increase, rich in the steeds of dynamic energies, thousandfold in its wideness.
Mantra 5
Indra and Bṛhaspati, we call you with our inspired utterances when the Soma is pressed, for the drinking and inward taking of this Soma-delight.
Mantra 6
Drink the Soma, O Indra and Bṛhaspati, in the home of the giver; rejoice there in that dwelling—make it your settled seat within us.
They are called as a pair: Indra represents victorious power and force, while Bṛhaspati represents sacred speech, priestly wisdom, and right guidance. Together they bring success through both strength and insight.
It asks the deities to accept the offering and Soma, to be present in the giver’s home, and to place within the worshippers abundant rayi—prosperity, increase, and victorious well-being.
On the ritual level it means the gods are invited to make the sacrificer’s space their seat and favor it. On an inner level it suggests stabilizing divine strength and inspired clarity within the practitioner.
