This hymn enthrones Agni as the joyful Hotṛ who stands firm in the vidathas (sacrificial gatherings), spreading his radiance and protective power across the earth. It portrays him as the son of Sahas (Force), lightning-charioted and flame-haired, praised even by Mitra, Varuṇa, and the Maruts. The poet finally dedicates the whole rite to Agni, asking him to know and “taste” the offering in its fullness and sweetness.

Mantra 1

आ होता मन्द्रो विदथान्यस्थात्सत्यो यज्वा कवितमः स वेधाः । विद्युद्रथः सहसस्पुत्रो अग्निः शोचिष्केशः पृथिव्यां पाजो अश्रेत् ॥

The glad Flame, the Hotṛ, has taken his stand in the gatherings—true, a sacrificer, the most seer-wise, the knower of right workings. Agni, son of Force, whose car is lightning, whose hair is flame, has extended his might upon the earth.

Mantra 2

अयामि ते नमउक्तिं जुषस्व ऋतावस्तुभ्यं चेतते सहस्वः । विद्वाँ आ वक्षि विदुषो नि षत्सि मध्य आ बर्हिरूतये यजत्र ॥

I bring to thee the word of homage; accept it, O power of the Truth—toward thee the will aspires, O mighty one. Knowing, bring the knowers; take thy seat in the midst upon the sacred grass for our help, O adorable.

Mantra 3

द्रवतां त उषसा वाजयन्ती अग्ने वातस्य पथ्याभिरच्छ । यत्सीमञ्जन्ति पूर्व्यं हविर्भिरा वन्धुरेव तस्थतुर्दुरोणे ॥

Let Dawn and the energising Power hasten to thee, O Agni, along the paths of the Life-breath; when they anoint thee, the ancient one, with the offerings, they take their stand in the home like yoked steeds at the car.

मित्रश्च तुभ्यं वरुणः सहस्वोऽग्ने विश्वे मरुतः सुम्नमर्चन् । यच्छोचिषा सहसस्पुत्र तिष्ठा अभि क्षितीः प्रथयन्त्सूर्यो नॄन् ॥

Mitra and Varuṇa, and all the Maruts, sing to thee the grace, O Agni the mighty. When with thy flame, O son of Force, thou standest spreading out the worlds of our habitation, like the Sun widening men into their full stature.

Mantra 5

वयं ते अद्य ररिमा हि काममुत्तानहस्ता नमसोपसद्य । यजिष्ठेन मनसा यक्षि देवानस्रेधता मन्मना विप्रो अग्ने ॥

Today we have brought to thee our aspiration, for with hands outstretched we approach in homage. With the most sacrificial mind, O Agni, offer to the gods; unfaltering in thy thought, O illumined one.

Mantra 6

त्वद्धि पुत्र सहसो वि पूर्वीर्देवस्य यन्त्यूतयो वि वाजाः । त्वं देहि सहस्रिणं रयिं नोऽद्रोघेण वचसा सत्यमग्ने ॥

From thee indeed, O son of Force, go forth the many ancient helps of the god, and the plenitudes of energising power. Do thou give us the thousand-fold rayi—by a word without deceit, O Agni, a word of truth.

तुभ्यं दक्ष कविक्रतो यानीमा देव मर्तासो अध्वरे अकर्म । त्वं विश्वस्य सुरथस्य बोधि सर्वं तदग्ने अमृत स्वदेह ॥

For thee, O capable one, O seer-willed, we mortals have done these works in the sacrifice, O god. Be thou aware of all that moves in the good chariot-course; and taste here, O Agni immortal, the whole of it in its sweetness.
