Gṛtsamada (Bhārgava)
Agni
Gāyatrī
This short Gāyatrī hymn invokes Agni as the Bharatas’ own fire—youngest yet foremost—asking him to bring radiant, much-desired wealth and wellbeing. It praises Agni’s purity and vast shining presence, emphasizing that he is strengthened by ghee oblations and functions as the ancient, choice Hotṛ who carries the rite to fulfillment.
Mantra 1
O Agni of the Bharatas, O youngest and best, bring to us the luminous wealth—O good one—the abundance greatly desired (the fullness that many seek).
Mantra 2
Let not the hostile power of want and wrong mastery rule over us—whether from godly forces or from mortal beings; cross us beyond that, and beyond the haters as well.
Mantra 3
With you, we would cross beyond all hostile forces, as streams of living waters pass over and through the obstructing banks.
Mantra 4
Pure and clarifying, worthy of adoration, O Agni, you blaze forth in the Vast; you are kindled and increased by the ghee—by the luminous essence offered within.
Mantra 5
You are ours, O Agni of the Bharatas; by the yielding powers and the forceful energies you are kindled—by the many-stepping rhythms that carry the offering forward.
Mantra 6
Running with our offering and pressed with ghee-essence, the ancient and choice Hotar—Agni, the wondrous son of Force—takes up the work of invocation within us.
It asks Agni to bring “luminous” and much-desired wealth—prosperity, wellbeing, and the successful fruit of worship for the community.
Because Agni is described as being kindled and strengthened by ghee; the oblation symbolizes nourishing the sacred fire so it can carry prayers effectively.
Hotṛ is the invoking priest. Calling Agni the ancient Hotṛ means he is the timeless, reliable mediator who makes the offering reach the gods and makes the rite work.
