Sukta 40

Mantra 1

सोमापूषणा जनना रयीणां जनना दिवो जनना पृथिव्याः । जातौ विश्वस्य भुवनस्य गोपौ देवा अकृण्वन्नमृतस्य नाभिम् ॥

O Soma and Pūṣan, begetters of plenitudes, begetters of heaven, begetters of earth—born as the two guardians of all becoming, the gods made you the navel-center of immortality.

Mantra 2

इमौ देवौ जायमानौ जुषन्तेमौ तमांसि गूहतामजुष्टा । आभ्यामिन्द्रः पक्वमामास्वन्तः सोमापूषभ्यां जनदुस्रियासु ॥

These two gods, coming to birth, take delight; these two conceal the darknesses that consent not. By these two Indra brings the ripened within the unripe; through Soma and Pūṣan he generates the shining herds of light.

Mantra 3

सोमापूषणा रजसो विमानं सप्तचक्रं रथमविश्वमिन्वम् । विषूवृतं मनसा युज्यमानं तं जिन्वथो वृषणा पञ्चरश्मिम् ॥

O Soma and Pūṣan, you impel the car that measures the mid-world, seven-wheeled, moving all; wide-turning, yoked by the mind—this five-reined force you set in motion, O strong ones.

Mantra 4

दिव्यन्यः सदनं चक्र उच्चा पृथिव्यामन्यो अध्यन्तरिक्षे । तावस्मभ्यं पुरुवारं पुरुक्षुं रायस्पोषं वि ष्यतां नाभिमस्मे ॥

One has made his seat aloft in heaven; the other upon earth and in the mid-space. May those two spread for us the navel-center of increase—plenitude of riches, abundant in desirable powers and fruitful in many growths—within us.

Mantra 5

विश्वान्यन्यो भुवना जजान विश्वमन्यो अभिचक्षाण एति । सोमापूषणाववतं धियं मे युवाभ्यां विश्वाः पृतना जयेम ॥

One of the two has brought forth all the worlds; the other moves beholding all. O Soma and Pūṣan, uphold my thought—by you two may we conquer all battles.

Mantra 6

धियं पूषा जिन्वतु विश्वमिन्वो रयिं सोमो रयिपतिर्दधातु । अवतु देव्यदितिरनर्वा बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः ॥

May Pūṣan, the all-impeller, quicken our insight; may Soma, lord of plenitude, set the plenitude in us. May the divine Aditi, unerring, protect us; may we speak the Vast in the assembly, rich in strong and luminous powers of the soul.
