Sukta 7

Mantra 1

स्वस्ति नो दिवो अग्ने पृथिव्या विश्वायुर्धेहि यजथाय देव । सचेमहि तव दस्म प्रकेतैरुरुष्या ण उरुभिर्देव शंसैः ॥

O Agni, set for us well-being from heaven and from earth; place in us a life that is universal, for the work of sacrifice, O God. May we move in union with thy wondrous clear discernments; protect us widely with thy wide affirmations of the divine.

Mantra 2

इमा अग्ने मतयस्तुभ्यं जाता गोभिरश्वैरभि गृणन्ति राधः । यदा ते मर्तो अनु भोगमानड्वसो दधानो मतिभिः सुजात ॥

These thoughts, O Agni, born for thee, praise thy plenitude of luminous riches—rays (cows) and powers of movement (horses). When the mortal follows after thy enjoyment and attains it, bearing within him the ‘Vasu’—the true substance—by rightly-formed inspirations, O well-born Flame.

Mantra 3

अग्निं मन्ये पितरमग्निमापिमग्निं भ्रातरं सदमित्सखायम् । अग्नेरनीकं बृहतः सपर्यं दिवि शुक्रं यजतं सूर्यस्य ॥

I regard Agni as the Father, Agni as the near kin, Agni as the Brother, ever the Friend. I serve the vast front of Agni—his shining, adorable face in heaven, the pure radiance of the Sun.

Mantra 4

सिध्रा अग्ने धियो अस्मे सनुत्रीर्यं त्रायसे दम आ नित्यहोता । ऋतावा स रोहिदश्वः पुरुक्षुर्द्युभिरस्मा अहभिर्वाममस्तु ॥

Make our understandings, O Agni, effective and victorious—those you guard within the home, O constant Priest. Possessed of the Truth, with ruddy steeds and wide increase, may there be for him (the offered-to) the desirable good through luminous days and awakenings.

Mantra 5

द्युभिर्हितं मित्रमिव प्रयोगं प्रत्नमृत्विजमध्वरस्य जारम् । बाहुभ्यामग्निमायवोऽजनन्त विक्षु होतारं न्यसादयन्त ॥

Set in the lights, like a Friend in the advance, the ancient priest of the rite, the beloved of the sacrifice—Agni. The Āyus brought him forth with their arms and seated the Hotṛ among the peoples (clans), establishing the divine Will in the human habitations.

Mantra 6

स्वयं यजस्व दिवि देव देवान्किं ते पाकः कृणवदप्रचेताः । यथायज ऋतुभिर्देव देवानेवा यजस्व तन्वं सुजात ॥

Sacrifice by thyself in heaven, O God, to the gods; what can the unknowing do for thee? As thou didst sacrifice to the gods with the seasons, so now sacrifice—make thy own being the offering, O well-born.

Mantra 7

भवा नो अग्नेऽवितोत गोपा भवा वयस्कृदुत नो वयोधाः । रास्वा च नः सुमहो हव्यदातिं त्रास्वोत नस्तन्वो अप्रयुच्छन् ॥

Become for us, O Agni, a helper and a guardian; become a maker of our vital force and a holder of our vitality. Give us, O greatly mighty, the vast gift of the offering, and protect our bodies, that they fall not away from the path.
