
Sukta 10.6
Agni
This hymn praises Agni as the luminous, all-illumining presence who shelters the singer and makes the offering effective. Agni is celebrated as the swift messenger who, delighted by hymns, draws the gods toward the sacrifice and becomes himself the first “havya,” the primordial offering. The verses emphasize Agni’s greatness, his elder rays, and his role in awakening and increasing the earliest divine energies.
Mantra 1
अयं स यस्य शर्मन्नवोभिरग्नेरेधते जरिताभिष्टौ । ज्येष्ठेभिर्यो भानुभिॠषूणां पर्येति परिवीतो विभावा ॥
This is he—under whose shelter, by his protecting powers, the singer grows in the desired offering to Agni. He who, luminous, encompassed, moves about the seers with his eldest rays, the all-illumining Fire.
Mantra 2
यो भानुभिर्विभावा विभात्यग्निर्देवेभिॠतावाजस्रः । आ यो विवाय सख्या सखिभ्योऽपरिह्वृतो अत्यो न सप्तिः ॥
He who with his rays shines forth, the all-illumining Agni, moving with the gods as the ever-flowing force of ṛta. He comes, widening the comradeship for his friends, unhindered—like a swift steed with its team.
Mantra 3
ईशे यो विश्वस्या देववीतेरीशे विश्वायुरुषसो व्युष्टौ । आ यस्मिन्मना हवींष्यग्नावरिष्टरथः स्कभ्नाति शूषैः ॥
He rules over every divine seeking; he rules, life-wide, in the dawning out of the Dawn. In him the mind sets its offerings into Agni; the unbroken-car advances and upholds by his mighty strengths.
Mantra 4
शूषेभिर्वृधो जुषाणो अर्कैर्देवाँ अच्छा रघुपत्वा जिगाति । मन्द्रो होता स जुह्वा यजिष्ठः सम्मिश्लो अग्निरा जिघर्ति देवान् ॥
Growing by strengths, taking delight, with hymns he goes swiftly to the gods. The rapturous Priest, most fit to sacrifice, with the ladle of offering—Agni, perfectly mingled, draws the gods to us.
Mantra 5
तमुस्रामिन्द्रं न रेजमानमग्निं गीर्भिर्नमोभिरा कृणुध्वम् । आ यं विप्रासो मतिभिर्गृणन्ति जातवेदसं जुह्वं सहानाम् ॥
Make ready with words and reverence that radiant Agni, unshaken like Indra. Him whom the inspired ones praise with their understandings—Jātavedas, the offering-ladle of the powers that can endure and conquer.
Mantra 6
सं यस्मिन्विश्वा वसूनि जग्मुर्वाजे नाश्वाः सप्तीवन्त एवैः । अस्मे ऊतीरिन्द्रवाततमा अर्वाचीना अग्न आ कृणुष्व ॥
In whom all riches gather together, as horses gather for the prize with their teams and their swift goings—make those helps for us, most filled with Indra’s force, turned toward us, O Agni.
Mantra 7
अधा ह्यग्ने मह्ना निषद्या सद्यो जज्ञानो हव्यो बभूथ । तं ते देवासो अनु केतमायन्नधावर्धन्त प्रथमास ऊमाः ॥
Then indeed, O Agni, sitting by thy greatness, born at once, thou becamest the one to be offered to. The gods followed after thy sign; then the first energies increased thee, the primal impulsions.
It presents Agni as the protecting power for the worshipper, the priestly fire who makes the sacrifice succeed, and the force that brings the gods to the ritual.
In Vedic ritual, Agni is the mediator: when offerings are placed in fire with proper praise, Agni is invoked to invite and convey the gods to partake in the rite.
It points to Agni’s immediate, primordial presence—fire appears instantly when kindled, and symbolically it represents a first principle that awakens divine energies and initiates sacred action.
