Sukta 10.162
Late Maṇḍala 10 protective/healing tradition; specific r̥ṣi uncertain in common catalogs.
Agni (rakṣohā) empowered by brahman; protective exorcistic-healing frame.
Likely Tr̥ṣṭubh; requires scansion confirmation.
This short protective hymn invokes Agni as rakṣohā (slayer of hostile forces), empowered by brahman, to expel a wasting, ill-named presence believed to have entered the womb and threaten conception and progeny. It names multiple modes of intrusion—physical lurking, creeping within the yoni, and delusion through dream and darkness—and repeatedly commands the remover-force to drive the danger away. The sukta functions as an exorcistic-healing prayer aimed at safeguarding fertility, pregnancy, and the continuity of the family line.
Mantra 1
By the mantra-force, may Agni—fully awake in right understanding, slayer of the dark intruder—drive away from here the wasting power that has lodged with evil name in your womb, that lies in the birthplace.
Mantra 2
The wasting power that lies in your womb, evil-named, lodged in the matrix—Agni, together with the mantra-force, has driven it out, crushing it away, as a devourer of rawness and corruption.
Mantra 3
Whoever strikes down what is taking wing, whoever harms what is still settling into life, whoever attacks the creeping growth—whoever seeks to kill what has been born for you, him from here we destroy.
Mantra 4
Whoever wanders between your thighs, lying between the wedded pair; whoever creeps within the womb from inside—him from here we destroy.
Mantra 5
Whoever approaches you by disguise—becoming ‘brother’, becoming ‘husband’, becoming ‘lover’—and seeks to strike down your progeny, him from here we destroy.
Mantra 6
Whoever, by dream and darkness, deluding you, approaches to strike down your progeny—him from here we destroy.
It is a protective healing hymn that calls on Agni, strengthened by sacred speech (brahman), to drive away a wasting affliction or hostile presence thought to have entered the womb and to safeguard future offspring.
Because the ritual aim is fertility and safe continuation of the family line. The sukta treats threats to conception and pregnancy as something that can be expelled through Agni and mantra.
Typically alongside a fire rite: the household fire is kindled, oblations like ghee are offered, and the verses are recited as a banishing prayer to remove harm and re-establish protection around the couple and the womb.
