Sukta 1.21
Indrāgnī (dual deity: Indra and Agni)
Gāyatrī (likely for early RV dual-invocation hymns; not verified from input)
This brief Indrāgnī hymn is a dual-invocation calling Indra and Agni to approach the Soma-pressing and accept the praise offered to them together. It emphasizes their shared might, their readiness to come to the sacrifice, and their capacity to keep the worshipper awake in truth and grant protective peace (śarma).
Mantra 1
Here I call Indra and Agni to come near; for these two we desire the hymn of affirmation—come, you most perfect drinkers of Soma, to the pressed delight.
Mantra 2
Proclaim them in the sacrifices—Indra and Agni—O human souls, and make yourselves radiant; sing them in the Gāyatrī measures so the right rhythm may shape the inner offering.
Mantra 3
Those two—praised in the harmony of Mitra—we call, Indra and Agni; Soma-drinkers, come for the drinking of Soma, for the increase of delight and right concord within us.
Mantra 4
Mighty in your being, we invoke you to come near this pressed oblation of the Soma-pressing; Indra and Agni, come here and take your place in the working.
Mantra 5
You two, vast in your greatness, lords of the sacred seat, Indra and Agni—crush the forces of distortion; let the devourers of the offering become barren of their power and issue.
Mantra 6
By that Truth, keep awake and vigilant upon the luminous step of wide discernment; Indra and Agni, grant us the sheltering peace that guards the advance of consciousness.
Indrāgnī means Indra and Agni invoked together as a paired power—Indra as heroic strength and Agni as the sacrificial fire and messenger.
It invites Indra and Agni to come near the ritual and drink the pressed Soma, while asking them to protect the worshipper and support wakeful, truthful awareness.
Śarma is protective peace or secure shelter—well-being that keeps one safe and steady, both outwardly in life and inwardly in mind.
