Adhyaya 4

Verse 1

ऑपन--#हू< बक। ] अति: चतुथों5 ध्याय: भीष्मजीका कर्णको प्रोत्साहन देकर युद्धके लिये भेजना तथा कर्णके आगमनसे कौरवोंका हर्षोल्लास संजय उवाच तस्य लालप्यत: श्रुत्वा कुरुवृद्ध: पितामह: । देशकालोचितं वाक्यमन्रवीत्‌ प्रीतमानस:

Sañjaya said: Hearing him speak at length, the grandsire Bhīṣma—elder of the Kurus—replied with words suited to the place and the time, his mind pleased.

Verse 2

संजय कहते हैं--राजन्‌! इस प्रकार बहुत कुछ बोलते हुए कर्णकी बात सुनकर कुरुकुलके वृद्ध पितामह भीष्मने प्रसन्नचित्त होकर देश और कालके अनुसार यह बात कही -- || समुद्र इव सिन्धूनां ज्योतिषामिव भास्कर: । सत्यस्य च यथा सन्‍्तो बीजानामिव चोर्वरा,“कर्ण! जैसे सरिताओंका आश्रय समुद्र, ज्योतिर्मय पदार्थोंका सूर्य, सत्यका साधु पुरुष, बीजोंका उर्वरा भूमि और प्राणियोंकी जीविकाका आधार मेघ है, उसी प्रकार तुम भी अपने सुहृदोंके आश्रयदाता बनो। जैसे देवता सहस्रलोचन इन्द्रका आश्रय लेकर जीवन- निर्वाह करते हैं, उसी प्रकार समस्त बन्धु-बान्धव तुम्हारा आश्रय लेकर जीवन धारण करें

Sañjaya said: O King, hearing Karṇa speak at length, the aged grandsire of the Kuru line, Bhīṣma, pleased at heart and speaking in a manner suited to the time and place, said: “Karṇa, as the ocean is the refuge of rivers, as the sun is foremost among luminous bodies, as the righteous are the support of truth, and as fertile earth is the support of seeds—so you too should become the shelter of your well-wishers. Let your kinsmen and allies sustain their lives by relying on you, just as the gods live supported by Indra of a thousand eyes.”

Verse 3

इस प्रकार श्रीमहाभारत द्रोणपर्वके अन्तर्गत द्रोणाभिषेक पर्वमें कर्णवाक्यविषयक तीयरा अध्याय पूरा हुआ,पर्जन्य इव भूतानां प्रतिष्ठा सुह्ददां भव । बान्धवास्त्वानुजीवन्तु सहस्राक्षमिवामरा: “कर्ण! जैसे सरिताओंका आश्रय समुद्र, ज्योतिर्मय पदार्थोंका सूर्य, सत्यका साधु पुरुष, बीजोंका उर्वरा भूमि और प्राणियोंकी जीविकाका आधार मेघ है, उसी प्रकार तुम भी अपने सुहृदोंके आश्रयदाता बनो। जैसे देवता सहस्रलोचन इन्द्रका आश्रय लेकर जीवन- निर्वाह करते हैं, उसी प्रकार समस्त बन्धु-बान्धव तुम्हारा आश्रय लेकर जीवन धारण करें

Sañjaya said: “Become, for your well-wishers, a firm support like the rain-cloud is for living beings. Let your kinsmen live on, sustained by you, just as the gods sustain their life by taking refuge in Sahasrākṣa (Indra).”

Verse 4

मानहा भव शत्रूणां मित्राणां नन्दिवर्धन: । कौरवाणां भव गतिर्यथा विष्णुर्दिवौकसाम्‌,“तुम शत्रुओंका मान मर्दन करनेवाले और मित्रोंका आनन्द बढ़ानेवाले होओ। जैसे भगवान्‌ विष्णु देवताओंके आश्रय हैं, उसी प्रकार तुम कौरवोंके आधार बनो इति श्रीमहाभारते द्रोणपर्वणि द्रोणाभिषेकपर्वणि कर्णाश्वासे चतुर्थो5ध्याय:

Sañjaya said: “Become the crusher of the enemies’ pride and the increaser of your friends’ joy. As Viṣṇu is the refuge and support of the gods, so be the sure reliance and guiding support of the Kauravas.”

Verse 5

स्वबाहुबलवीर्येण धार्तराष्ट्रजयैषिणा । कर्ण राजपुरं गत्वा काम्बोजा निर्जितास्त्वया,“कर्ण! तुमने दुर्योधनके लिये विजयकी इच्छा रखकर अपनी भुजाओंके बल और पराक्रमसे राजपुरमें जाकर समस्त काम्बोजोंपर विजय पायी है

Sañjaya said: “O Karṇa, seeking victory for Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s son (Duryodhana), you went to Rājapura and, by the strength and valor of your own arms, subdued the Kāmbojas.”

Verse 6

गिरिव्रजगताश्चापि नग्नजित्प्रमुखा नृपा: । अम्बष्ठाश्न विदेहाश्ष गान्धाराश्ष॒ जितास्त्वया,“गिरिव्रजके निवासी नग्नजित्‌ आदि नरेश, अम्बष्ठ, विदेह और गान्धारदेशीय क्षत्रियोंको भी तुमने परास्त किया है

Sañjaya said: “And the kings who had gone to Girivraja—led by Nagnajit—together with the warriors of Ambaṣṭha, Videha, and Gandhāra, have also been subdued by you.”

Verse 7

हिमवद्‌दुर्गनिलया: किराता रणकर्कशा: । दुर्योधनस्य वशगास्त्वया कर्ण पुरा कृता:,“कर्ण! पूर्वकालमें तुमने हिमालयके दुर्गमें निवास करनेवाले रणकर्कश किरातोंको भी जीतकर दुर्योधनके अधीन कर दिया था

Sañjaya said: “O Karṇa, in former times you subdued even the Kirātas—hard and fierce in battle—who dwelt in the mountain-forts of the Himālaya, and you brought them under Duryodhana’s control.”

Verse 8

उत्कला मेकला: पौण्ड्रा: कलिड्रन्ध्राश्न संयुगे निषादाश्ष त्रिगर्ताश्न बाह्लीकाश्न जितास्त्वया,“उत्कल, मेकल, पौण्ड्र, कलिंग, अंध्र, निषाद, त्रिगर्त और बाह्नलीक आदि देशोंके राजाओंको भी तुमने परास्त किया है

Sañjaya said: “In the press of battle you have also subdued the kings of Utkala, Mekala, Paundra, Kalinga, Andhra, the Niṣādas, the Trigartas, and the Bāhlīkas.”

Verse 9

तत्र तत्र च संग्रामे दुर्योधनहितैषिणा । बहवश्च जिता: कर्ण त्वया वीरा महौजसा,“कर्ण! इनके सिवा और भी जहाँ-तहाँ संग्राम-भूमिमें दुर्योधनका हित चाहनेवाले तुम महापराक्रमी शूरवीरने बहुत-से वीरोंपर विजय पायी है

Sañjaya said: “Here and there across the battlefield, O Karṇa, you—mighty in prowess and ever seeking Duryodhana’s welfare—have conquered many warriors.”

Verse 10

यथा दुर्योधनस्तात सज्ञातिकुलबान्धव: । तथा त्वमपि सर्वेषां कौरवाणां गतिर्भव,“तात! कुटुम्बी, कुल और बन्धु-बान्धवोंसहित दुर्योधन जैसे सब कौरवोंका आधार है, उसी प्रकार तुम भी कौरवोंके आश्रयदाता बनो

Sañjaya said: “O dear one, just as Duryodhana—together with his kinsmen, clan, and relations—stands as the main support of the Kauravas, so you too must become the refuge and sustaining course for all the Kauravas.”

Verse 11

शिवेनाभिवदामि त्वां गच्छ युध्यस्व शत्रुभि: | अनुशाधि कुरून्‌ संख्ये धत्स्व दुर्योधने जयम्‌,“मैं तुम्हारा कल्याणचिन्तन करते हुए तुम्हें आशीर्वाद देता हूँ, जाओ, शत्रुओंके साथ युद्ध करो। रणक्षेत्रमें कौरव सैनिकोंको कर्तव्यका आदेश दो और दुर्योधनको विजय प्राप्त कराओ

“With auspicious blessing I salute you: go, fight the foes. In the press of battle, command the Kuru warriors to their duty, and secure victory for Duryodhana.”

Verse 12

भवान्‌ पौत्रसमो<स्माकं यथा दुर्योधनस्तथा । तवापि धर्मत: सर्वे यथा तस्य वयं तथा

Sañjaya said: “To us you are like a grandson, just as Duryodhana is. By the rule of dharma, all of us stand to you as we stand to him.”

Verse 13

“दुर्योधनकी तरह तुम भी मेरे पौत्रके समान हो। धर्मतः जैसे मैं उसका हितैषी हूँ, उसी प्रकार तुम्हारा भी हूँ ।। यौनात्‌ सम्बन्धकाल्लोके विशिष्ट संगतं सताम्‌ | सद्धिः सह नरश्रेष्ठ प्रवदन्ति मनीषिण:,“नरश्रेष्ठी संसारमें यौन (कौटुम्बिक)-सम्बन्धकी अपेक्षा साधु पुरुषोंके साथ की हुई मैत्रीका सम्बन्ध श्रेष्ठ है; यह मनीषी महात्मा कहते हैं

Sañjaya said: “Like Duryodhana, you too are as a grandson to me. By dharma, just as I am his well-wisher, so am I yours as well. For in this world, the bond formed through association with the virtuous is held to be superior to merely bodily or familial ties; thus do the wise declare, O best of men.”

Verse 14

स सत्यसंगतो भूत्वा ममेदमिति निश्चित: । कुरूणां पालय बलं॑ यथा दुर्योधनस्तथा,“तुम सच्चे मित्र होकर और यह सब कुछ मेरा ही है, ऐसा निश्चित विचार रखकर दुर्योधनके ही समान समस्त कौरवदलकी रक्षा करो”

Sañjaya said: “Be firmly allied in truth and loyalty, convinced that ‘this is mine’—my own cause and responsibility. Protect the Kuru host just as Duryodhana himself would.”

Verse 15

निशम्य वचन॑ तस्य चरणावभिवाद्य च । ययौ वैकर्तन: कर्ण: समीपं सर्वधन्विनाम्‌,भीष्मजीका यह वचन सुनकर विकर्तनपुत्र कर्णने उनके चरणोंमें प्रणाम किया और वह फिर सम्पूर्ण धनुर्धर सैनिकोंके समीप चला गया

Sañjaya said: Hearing his words, Karṇa—the son of Vaikartana—bowed in reverence at his feet, and then went back to the vicinity of all the bowmen.

Verse 16

सो5भिवीक्ष्य नरौघाणां स्थानमप्रतिमं महत्‌ । व्यूढप्रहरणोरस्कं॑ सैन्यं तत्‌ समबृंहयत्‌,वहाँ कर्णने कौरव सैनिकोंका वह अनुपम एवं विशाल स्थान देखा। समस्त सैनिक व्यूहाकारमें खड़े थे और अपने वक्ष:स्थलके समीप अनेक प्रकारके अस्त्र-शस्त्रोंको बाँधे हुए थे। कर्णने उस समय सारी कौरव-सेनाको उत्साहित किया

Sañjaya said: Seeing that vast and incomparable position of the massed warriors—an army drawn up in ordered formation, with weapons and armor borne upon their chests—Karna then strengthened the spirit of the Kaurava host, rousing them for the coming clash.

Verse 17

हृषिता: कुरव: सर्वे दुर्योधनपुरोगमा: । उपागतं महाबाहुं सर्वानीकपुरःसरम्‌

Sañjaya said: All the Kurus, led by Duryodhana, were delighted on seeing the mighty-armed hero arrive—he who marched at the head of the entire host.

Verse 18

कर्ण दृष्टवा महात्मानं युद्धाय समुपस्थितम्‌ । समस्त सेनाओंके आगे चलनेवाले महाबाहु, महामनस्वी कर्णको आया और युद्धके लिये उपस्थित हुआ देख दुर्योधन आदि समस्त कौरव हर्षसे खिल उठे ।। क्ष्वेडितास्फोटितरवै: सिंहनादरवैरपि । धनु:शब्दैश्व विविध: कुरव: समपूजयन्‌,उन समस्त कौरवोंने उस समय गर्जने, ताल ठोकने, सिंहनाद करने तथा नाना प्रकारसे धनुषकी टंकार फैलाने आदिके द्वारा कर्णका स्वागत-सत्कार किया

Sañjaya said: Seeing the great-souled Karṇa arrive at the front, ready for battle, the Kauravas—Duryodhana and the rest—were filled with joy. They honored him with loud acclamations: roars and shouts, the clapping and slapping of arms, lion-like cries, and the many resonant twangs of bows.
