Bhīṣma’s Encouragement of Karṇa
Girivrajagatāś cāpi Nagnajitpramukhā nṛpāḥ | Ambaṣṭhāś ca Videhāś ca Gāndhārāś ca jitās tvayā ||
Sañjaya said: “And the kings who had gone to Girivraja—led by Nagnajit—together with the warriors of Ambaṣṭha, Videha, and Gandhāra, have also been subdued by you.”
The verse underscores the expanding scope of victory over multiple regions and rulers; ethically, it implies that conquest increases the victor’s burden of righteous governance and restraint, since power over many peoples demands accountability rather than mere pride.
Sañjaya is reporting a sequence of military successes: kings associated with Girivraja, led by Nagnajit, along with forces from Ambaṣṭha, Videha, and Gandhāra, are said to have been defeated by the addressed hero (tvayā).
