Bhīṣma’s Encouragement of Karṇa
tatra tatra ca saṅgrāme duryodhana-hitaiṣiṇā | bahavaś ca jitāḥ karṇa tvayā vīrā mahaujasā ||
Sañjaya said: “Here and there across the battlefield, O Karṇa, you—mighty in prowess and ever seeking Duryodhana’s welfare—have conquered many warriors.”
The verse highlights the ethical tension between personal loyalty and righteous conduct: Karṇa’s strength and success are framed as service to Duryodhana’s interests, inviting reflection on how valor becomes morally colored by the cause it supports.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Karṇa, acting for Duryodhana’s benefit, has been defeating numerous warriors at different points across the battlefield.
