Sukta 8

Rishi: Atharvanic/Angirasa tradition (hymn attributed in tradition to Atharvan/Angiras line; precise r̥ṣi assignment depends on Anukramaṇī)

Devata: Sādhyas, Rudras, Vasus, Ādityas (collective divine hosts)

Chandas: Anuṣṭubh (predominant in AV; this verse conforms to anuṣṭubh-like cadence)

Inside Sukta 8

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn frames reality itself as a divine net (Śakra’s jāla), establishing the cosmic legitimacy of ensnaring and controlling hostile forces.

  2. What it asks

May the unified divine companies advance with might, bind and overwhelm the enemy host, and place the adversaries under obscuration and constraint.

  3. Where its power lies

The speaker claims operative access to Indra’s net (indrajāla) and the efficacy of tamas and bandhana to disable ‘those yonder,’ while consolidating divine plurality into ‘one uplifted’ power.

  4. How it closes

A victory-litany (jaya…svāhā) seals the rite, ending with the decisive covering/spreading act using nīla-lohita over the foes and the explicit reversal: ‘these win; those lose’.

Kind of hymn

Abhicarika (Sorcery) / Rakṣohā (Apotropaic, anti-hostile force)

What it is for

To secure victory for the patron’s party (“these here”), to subdue and disperse the opposing party (“those yonder”), and to render enemies powerless through netting, covering, and darkness-imposition.

Who it is for

Ritual specialists (Atharvan priests) performing protective/combative rites for a patron—especially in contexts of conflict, rivalry, litigation-like verbal assault, or organized hostile pressure (senā).

Also used as

  • Rakṣohā (apotropaic/anti-hostile)
  • Jayakarman (victory-operation)
  • Bandhana (binding/ensnaring)
  • Stambhana (immobilization)

The deity

A coordinated divine coalition functioning as a single force (“eka…udyataḥ”), expressed through the Atharvanic technology of the net (jāla/indrajāla) and the covering of darkness (tamas) to disable adversaries and secure triumph.

Powers of the deity

  • Unification of divine companies into one overpowering agency
  • Binding/ensnaring and immobilizing hostile forces (jāla, jāladaṇḍa)
  • Obscuring, confounding, and rendering foes ineffective (tamas)
  • Bestowing victory and dominance (jaya-karman)
  • Neutralizing hostile speech and counter-spells (durāhāmi—ill-speaking foes)

Why the deity is called

To enlist a single, irresistible divine front that can bind the enemy host, conceal/confound them, and transfer victory to the patron’s side while suppressing hostile speech and magical retaliation.

The seer

  • Atharvan/Angiras lineage (anukramaṇī-based assignment; specific r̥ṣi varies by recension)Atharvan. Abhicārika and rakṣohā charms: binding (bandhana), immobilizing hostile troops, countering rival spells, and subjugating opponents through net/covering symbolism (jāla, tamas, āvaraṇa).

Other hymns of this seer

  • AVŚ 8.7
  • AVŚ 8.9
  • AVŚ 6.75 (rakṣohā-type parallels in Atharvanic style)

Preparing for the rite

  • Establish a protected recitation space (clean ground, boundary-marking) and seat the patron facing the intended direction of ‘sending’ the spell (toward the adversary).
  • Prepare a symbolic binding implement: a rod/staff (daṇḍa) wrapped or marked as a ‘net-staff’ (jāladaṇḍa), or a cord/mesh representing the net.
  • Prepare a covering medium: a blue-red (nīla-lohita) cloth, cord, or pigment for the final ‘covering’ act; keep water for purification and mouth-rinsing.
  • Mentally identify ‘these’ (patron’s side) and ‘those yonder’ (adversary) to align the deictic language of the hymn.

The rite

  • Recite the hymn in anuṣṭubh cadence, beginning with the cosmic/net premise (jāla/indrajāla) and moving into the mobilization of divine hosts.
  • At verses emphasizing binding and unity (e.g., the ‘one uplifted’ motif), lift the net-staff upward as a visible act of divine raising and threat-display.
  • At verses invoking tamas/obscuration, gesture as if casting a net or drawing a veil over the adversary’s direction.
  • At the concluding victory formula (jaya…svāhā), perform the sealing act: spread or extend the nīla-lohita covering toward the enemy-direction, affirming ‘these conquer; those be conquered’.
  • Optionally tie a knot/loop in the cord or net as a bandhana marker at the end of each recitation cycle.

What it needs

  • Jāladaṇḍa (net-staff) or binding cord/net
  • Nīla-lohita cloth/cord/pigment (blue-red) for the covering act
  • Water for purification (ācamanīya)
  • Optional: black sesame or soot as a tamas-symbol (regional Atharvanic practice; not required by the cited mantras)

When

Performed before contest/engagement, at liminal times (dawn/dusk) or immediately prior to a confrontation; can be repeated in cycles for sustained pressure.

The main substance

Jāla / indrajāla represented by a net-staff (jāladaṇḍa) or binding cord/net

Amulets

  • Jāladaṇḍa (rod wrapped/marked as a net)
  • Binding cord/mesh with knots (bandhana)
  • Nīla-lohita cloth/cord used as a ‘covering’ (āvaraṇa)

How it is prepared

Fashion a staff with cord-netting or cross-wrapping to signify ‘jāla’; prepare a blue-red cloth/cord for the final spreading gesture; keep items consecrated by prior recitation and handled only within the rite.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is primarily an Abhicarika (combative) and rakṣohā (anti-hostile) hymn, aimed at binding and disabling opponents and securing victory rather than curing disease.

In this sukta it functions as Indra/Śakra’s “net” power—an ensnaring, confounding force used to trap adversaries and place them under tamas (ritualized darkness/ineffectiveness).

It marks a concluding ‘covering’ act: a blue-red cloth/cord/pigment is spread or extended toward the foe as a ritual seal that symbolically veils, suppresses, and subjugates the hostile party.
