Sukta 181

Sukta 10.181

Rishi

Vasiṣṭha (named in the verse)

Devata

Dhātṛ / Savitṛ / Viṣṇu (triadic sourcing of the rite’s power; hymn concerns sacrificial formulation)

Chandas

Anuṣṭubh (explicitly referenced; verse itself may be in a different meter in some recensions, but the mantra thematizes Anuṣṭubh)

Inside Sukta 181

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Anuṣṭubh is presented as a carrier of the offering—meter itself becomes the vehicle of yajña, grounded in ‘wideness’ (pratha).

  2. Development

The hymn turns to discovery: what was hidden beyond (atihita), the supreme seat of sacrifice in the cave, is found and made operative—Agni is given the Vast (bṛhat).

  3. Climax

The primal yajus, fallen yet recoverable, is found by illumined mind; the gods’ path (devayāna) is opened and the solar gharma is brought down into the rite.

  4. Where it settles

All achievements are traced back to the shining ordainer Dhātṛ, the impelling Savitṛ, and the pervading Viṣṇu—affirming that correct form and divine sourcing make the sacrifice effective.

The deity: Dhātṛ / Savitṛ / Viṣṇu

  • In the VedaDhātṛ appears as the ‘establisher/ordainer’ who sets things in their places; Savitṛ is the golden impeller who arouses and sets beings and rites in motion; Viṣṇu is the all-pervading power whose ‘steps’ measure out the cosmic spaces. In this sukta they are invoked as the luminous provenance from which the hidden supports of yajña, the yajus-formula, and the solar gharma are obtained.
  • Cosmic functionTo found (Dhātṛ), to energize and consecrate (Savitṛ), and to pervade/measure the field of action (Viṣṇu), ensuring that sacrifice aligns with ṛta and becomes universally effective.
  • Inner significanceThe triad symbolizes right structure (Dhātṛ), awakened intention and inspiration (Savitṛ), and expansive integration or pervasion of consciousness (Viṣṇu), by which speech, mind, and act become a single efficacious offering.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha-gotra (one of the Saptaṛṣi lineages) · Foremost among the Vedic seers of the Rigveda, celebrated for hymns of insight into ṛta (cosmic order), for priestly mastery, and for the Vasiṣṭha–Viśvāmitra rivalry motif in later tradition.

Also by this seer

  • Major authorship of Rigveda Maṇḍala 7 (many hymns to Agni, Indra, Varuṇa–Mitra, and others)
  • Hymns emphasizing ṛta and Varuṇa’s moral-cosmic sovereignty (notably within RV 7)
  • Later Vedic and Itihāsa-Purāṇa tradition credits Vasiṣṭha with priestly counsel to kings (e.g., Ikṣvāku/Raghu line narratives), though these are post-Rigvedic developments

The rite, step by step

  • Saṅkalpa: affirm the rite’s alignment with ṛta and the intent to ‘bring’ (ā jabhāra/abharan) the hidden support of yajña into the present ritual.
  • Kindle/attend Agni as the receiving mouth of offerings; establish a focused, illumined mind (manasā dīdhyānāḥ).
  • Recite RV 10.181.1 to invoke Anuṣṭubh as the offering-bearing meter and to acknowledge Dhātṛ–Savitṛ–Viṣṇu as the rite’s empowering sources.
  • Recite RV 10.181.2 while offering into Agni, contemplating the discovery of the ‘supreme seat’ of yajña hidden in the cave (guhā) and the making of the Vast (bṛhat) for Agni.
  • Recite RV 10.181.3 to seal the rite: the ‘first yajus’ is recovered and the gharma (solar heat/clarity) is brought into the work; conclude with a brief silent assent/meditation on pervasion (Viṣṇu) and order (Dhātṛ).

Offerings

  • Ghee (ghṛta) into Agni
  • Samidh (fuel sticks)
  • Optional: oblations aligned with Savitṛ consecration (e.g., clarified butter with Savitṛ remembrance)

Frequently Asked Questions

It explains how sacrifice becomes effective through correct form—especially the Anuṣṭubh meter and the right yajus-formula—and how this power is sourced from Dhātṛ, Savitṛ, and Viṣṇu.

Anuṣṭubh is treated as a “carrier” of the offering: the meter is not just poetic form but a ritual vehicle that helps speech deliver the oblation correctly.

Gharma is the heat/ardor that ripens the rite; symbolically it is solar clarity and truth-energy drawn into the sacrifice so the work becomes luminous and successful.
