Inside Sukta 43

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A vivid summons of abundance: the ‘milch-cows’ of plenty are called to come swiftly with milk and honeyed sweetness, linked to ‘seven’ vast joy-bringing powers.

  2. Development

The hymn broadens into an all-gods praise, then focuses on functional divine agencies that move and guide—especially Pūṣan and Vāyu as impellers of thought and givers of vāja and substance.

  3. Climax

The prayer intensifies into a request for effective force and inner self-power (tman), where divine impulsion becomes the energizing center of aspiration and action.

  4. Where it settles

The Aśvins are invoked as the fresh, bliss-bringing helpers who lead rightly and bring rayi, heroic powers, and ‘deathless’ fortunes—ending in a comprehensive benediction.

The deity: Viśve Devāḥ with prominent invocations of nourishing powers

  • In the VedaThe Viśve Devāḥ are addressed as a collective presence of the gods—supporters of ṛta, givers of protection, increase, and well-being—approached through many functional forms (impellers, guides, healers, bestowers). In this hymn they appear as “seven vast, joy-bringing” powers and as specific divine agencies such as Pūṣan and Vāyu (who impel thought and movement) and the Aśvins (fresh helpers who bring safe guidance and boons).
  • Cosmic functionThey uphold order and harmony, distribute nourishment and wealth, propel vital movement (vāta/prāṇa), guide paths and journeys (Pūṣan), and restore wholeness and auspiciousness (Aśvins).
  • Inner significancePsychologically, the hymn invokes integrated powers of consciousness: abundance that feeds the being (dhenavaḥ as streams of sustenance), inspired motion and clarity (Vāyu), right orientation and discernment on life’s paths (Pūṣan), and healing, renewal, and “right-leading” progress (Aśvins).

The seer

  • Atri (Ātreya)Ātreya (Atri-gotra) · One of the great Rigvedic seers, celebrated for luminous, beneficent prayer and for hymns that call universal divine powers to bring protection, guidance, and increase (rayi).

Also by this seer

  • Rig Veda Mandala 5 is largely associated with the Ātreya family; many hymns therein are traditionally attributed to Atri and his lineage.
  • Atri is also a prominent ṛṣi across later Vedic-Itihāsa-Purāṇa memory, counted among the Saptarṣi (Seven Seers).

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the altar/fire (Agni) and establish a calm, attentive intention for increase (rayi) and right-leading (supranīti).
  • Recite the opening verses as an invitation for the ‘milch-cows’ of abundance—streams of nourishment—to approach unobstructed.
  • Offer oblations while naming the supportive powers: the collective Viśve Devāḥ, then functional helpers such as Pūṣan (path-finder) and Vāyu (vital mover/impeller).
  • Conclude with the Aśvins as the ‘fresh help’ that brings safe arrival, wholeness, and auspicious boons.
  • Close with a brief silent dedication, aligning personal effort with divine impulsion (vāja/draviṇa) and harmony (ṛta).

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) into Agni
  • Soma (where applicable) or a symbolic substitute in later practice
  • Milk/curd/honey (symbolic resonance with the hymn’s imagery)
  • Grains or cakes (puroḍāśa) according to rite
