Inside Sukta 30

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct call: Indra is drawn near and ‘anointed’ with Soma-drops, praised as the most bountiful and victory-giving power.

  2. Development

The hymn intensifies praise with epithets (Śatakratu, Vajrī, Soma-pā, friend) and turns praise into concrete petitions—aid in contest, protection, and the rite’s successful fulfillment.

  3. Climax

The strongest supplication: Indra is urged to act ‘so’ (tathā…kṛṇu) that the worshippers’ desire and offering reach completion—linking divine power to ritual efficacy and communal victory.

  4. Where it settles

It closes by fixing the boon—rayi, force, and well-being—within the worshippers, ending in a stabilizing request for enduring prosperity rather than a momentary gift.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is lauded as Śatakratu (of a hundred powers/works), Vajrī (wielder of the thunderbolt), Soma-drinker, and the close friend of the sacrificers who answers the call of praise and pressing.
  • Cosmic functionHe is the divine champion who releases the waters/light, breaks enclosing powers, protects the community, and establishes victory and expansive order through heroic force.
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes awakened will-power and victorious clarity—an inner force that shatters fear, inertia, and obstruction, enabling the practitioner’s energy (ojas) to rise and accomplish the intended offering and goal.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (one of the Seven Ṛṣis/Saptarṣi) · Foremost among Vedic seers for his inspired hymns, priestly authority (purohita tradition), and association with the royal line of the Bharatas/Tr̥tsus; celebrated for spiritual insight and mastery of mantra.

  • Conclude with a settling prayer that the requested prosperity and strength be ‘placed’ firmly in the sacrificers (ni dhāraya motif).

Offerings

  • Ghee/clarified butter (as customary accompaniment in Vedic offerings)
  • Stoma/stuti (formal praise as an offering of speech)

Frequently Asked Questions

It asks Indra to come to the Soma-offering, drink the Soma, and grant strength, victory over obstacles, protection, and rayi (prosperity and fullness).

Because Soma is the central offering that ‘invites’ and empowers Indra; the hymn treats Soma-drops (indu) and praise as the means that make Indra present and effective in helping the worshippers.

It is an epithet meaning ‘of a hundred powers/works,’ highlighting Indra’s many capacities—skill, might, and repeated ability to accomplish great deeds for those who invoke him.
