Mantra 1
स्वर्ज्योतिः प्राप्तिः। अजो ह्य१ग्नेरजनिष्ट शोकात् सो अपश्यज्जनितारमग्रे । तेन देवा देवतामग्रा आयन् तेन रोहान् रुरुहुर्मेध्यासः
Attainment of the light of heaven. For the Unborn was born from Agni’s burning heat; he beheld the Begetter in the beginning. Thereby the Gods first attained to godhead; thereby the consecrated climbed the ascents.
Mantra 2
क्रमध्वमग्निना नाकमुख्यान् हस्तेषु बिभ्रतः । दिवस्पृष्ठं स्वऽर्गत्वा मिश्रा देवेभिराध्वम्
Step ye forth with Agni, heaven-fronting, bearing (him/your means) in your hands. Having reached the back of heaven, having gone to the world of light, mingled with the Gods—there take your seat.
Mantra 3
पृष्ठात् पृथिव्या अहमन्तरिक्षमारुहमन्तरिक्षाद् दिवमारुहम्। दिवो नाकस्य पृष्ठात् स्व१र्ज्योतिरगामहम्
From Earth’s broad back I mounted to mid-air; from mid-air I mounted unto Heaven. From the back of Heaven’s vault I reached the light of Svàr—so went I.
Mantra 4
स्व१र्यन्तो नापेक्षन्त आ द्यां रोहन्ति रोदसी । यज्ञं ये विश्वतोधारं सुविद्वांसो वितेनिरे
Heaven-ward they go, and look not back: they climb unto the sky, the Two Worlds. They who, right-knowing, have stretched the Sacrifice, upheld on every side.
Mantra 5
अग्ने प्रेहि प्रथमो देवतानां चक्षुर्देवानामुत मानुषानाम्। इयक्षमाणा भृगुभिः सजोषाः स्वऽर्यन्तु यजमानाः स्वस्ति
Agni, go forth—first of the Gods art thou, the Eye of Gods and likewise of mankind. In sacrifice, in concord with the Bhṛgus, let the sacrificers fare to Svàr in weal.
Mantra 6
अजमनज्मि पयसा घृतेन दिव्यं सुपर्नं पयसं बृहन्तम्। तेन गेष्म सुकृतस्य लोकं स्वऽरारोहन्तो अभि नाकमुत्तमम्
The goat I anoint with milk and with ghee—heavenly, fair-winged, mighty with rich milk. Therewith may we attain the world of merit, as we climb to Svàr, unto the highest vault.

पञ्चौदनं पञ्चभिरङ्गुलिभिर्दर्व्योद्धर पञ्चधैतमोदनम्। प्राच्यां दिशि शिरो अजस्य धेहि दक्षिणायां दिशि दक्षिणं धेहि पार्श्वम्
The fivefold porridge—lift it with the ladle, with five fingers; portion this porridge in five divisions. In the eastern quarter set the goat’s head; in the southern quarter set the right flank.
Mantra 8
प्रतीच्यां दिशि भसदमस्य धेह्युत्तरस्यां दिश्युत्तरं धेहि पार्श्वम्। ऊर्ध्वायां दिश्य१जस्यानूकं धेहि दिशि ध्रुवायां धेहि पाजस्यऽमन्तरिक्षे मध्यतो मध्यमस्य
In the western quarter set thou the rump of this; in the northern quarter set thou the northern portion—set the flank. In the upward quarter set thou the goat’s back-bone; in the steadfast quarter set thou the vigorous part; in mid-air, from the middle, set thou its middle.
Mantra 9
शृतमजं शृतया प्रोर्णुहि त्वचा सर्वैरङ्गैः संभृतं विश्वरूपम्। स उत् तिष्ठेतो अभि नाकमुत्तमं पद्भिश्चतुर्भिः प्रति तिष्ठ दिक्षु
The boiled goat—cover thou it with the boiled (preparation), with skin; with all its members, compacted, manifold in form. Let it rise from hence toward the highest heaven; with four feet take thou firm stand, confronting, in the quarters.
It aims to secure prosperity and a successful ‘ascent’ to the heavenly light (svàr-jyotis) by mapping the sacrificer’s path through earth, midspace, and heaven and stabilizing the rite in the directions.
These are ritual instructions that build a miniature cosmos in the offering area: dividing the porridge and placing parts by quarter aligns the rite with cosmic order, which is believed to enable success and ascent.
It is both: it contains a powerful ascent declaration (a visionary, performative statement) and also practical directions for cooking, portioning, and placing offerings so the spoken ascent is ritually ‘made true.’
