Sukta 48

Sukta 8.48

This Soma-hymn celebrates the tasted “sweetness” (madhu) of Soma as a life-giving power that clarifies the mind, widens inner freedom, and gathers gods and mortals around a single sustaining essence. Soma is praised as an indwelling guardian seated in every limb, asked to forgive lapses in right action (vrata), and invoked for all-sided protection and access to the sun-world (svar). The hymn thus moves from ecstatic experience to ethical reconciliation and finally to comprehensive safeguarding by Soma/Indu.

Inside Sukta 48

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The seer declares direct experience: having tasted the sweet Soma, the mind becomes clear and mastery arises, opening a wider freedom.

  2. Development

Soma is universalized as the ‘Honey’ around which gods and mortals move; then he is addressed as an indwelling guardian present in every limb and as the seer who watches human life.

  3. Climax

A frank ethical turn: if we have diminished Soma’s laws (vrata), may he forgive—Soma as intimate friend and moral protector.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn settles into comprehensive protection and empowerment: Soma gives strength from every side, leads toward the sun-world, and guards from front and behind.

The deity: Soma

  • Cosmic functionHe mediates vitality and immortality (amṛtatva), sustains strength and inspiration, and opens the path to the luminous realm (svar) while guarding order through his “laws” (vratāni).
  • Inner significanceSoma signifies the inner nectar of consciousness—joy that purifies thought, consolidates the scattered self, and becomes a moral compass: delight aligned with right working rather than mere intoxication.

The seer

  • Pragātha Kāṇva (Kāṇva tradition; specific seer uncertain)Kāṇva (Kāṇva-gotra) · The Kāṇvas are especially noted for Soma praise-poetry that blends ecstatic experience (madhu/ānanda) with ritual precision and protective petitions; this sukta is characteristic in portraying Soma as both delight and moral guardian.
