Sukta 31

Sukta 8.31

Devata

Indra

This hymn centers on Indra’s delight in a well-performed sacrifice: Soma pressed, oblations cooked, and the brahman (inspired sacred speech) rightly uttered. It links outer rite with inner preparedness, seeking protection, strength, and victory—culminating in the idea that the devoted yajamāna overcomes the “non-sacrificing” forces of disorder within and without.

Inside Sukta 31

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by defining the ideal sacrificer: one who truly offers, presses Soma, prepares the oblation—and whose brahman becomes pleasing to Indra (RV 8.31.1).

  2. Development

It broadens from ritual correctness to the seeking of sheltering powers in the world (mountains, rivers) and companionship with sustaining divinity (Viṣṇu motif), integrating protection with forward movement.

  3. Climax

The peak is the prayer for tangible heroic force and swift mastery (vīrya and aśvya), grounded in the yajamāna’s will set upon the Gods (RV 8.31.18).

  4. Where it settles

It resolves by asserting victory: aligned intention plus offering overcomes the ‘unsacrificing’ forces—restoring order, confidence, and divine support.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is praised as the mighty, exhilarated by Soma, responsive to brahman, and the foremost helper of the sacrificer who performs correctly. He is approached as protector and giver of vīrya (heroic power), wealth, and triumph over hostile powers.
  • Cosmic functionChampion of ṛta against chaos: he releases energies, breaks obstacles, and establishes victorious order for gods and men, especially through the Soma-sacrifice nexus.
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes awakened will-force and courageous clarity—strengthened by disciplined offering and truthful speech—by which one conquers inertia, doubt, and inner “ayajvan” (non-offering) tendencies.

The seer

  • Kaṇva (attribution within the Kaṇva corpus; some verses transmitted with uncertain seer labels)Kaṇva gotra (Kaṇvayana tradition) · A principal seer-family of the Eighth Maṇḍala, renowned for Indra-Soma praise-hymns that emphasize correct ritual performance and potent brahman (mantric inspiration).
