Sukta 1.186

Devata

Savitṛ (with Viśvānara aspect)

This hymn is an invitational litany that calls Savitṛ in his Viśvānara (“all-pervading, all-in-man”) aspect to enter the sacrifice with the illumined streams of offering and to widen the worshipper’s inspired will to embrace the whole moving world. As the praise unfolds, allied deities—especially Tvaṣṭṛ and Indra Vṛtrahan—are invoked to join in a shared “abhipitva” (intimate dwelling/communion), granting vigor, settled stability, and enduring riches. The hymn culminates in the image of dīdhiti (bright kindling/inner illumination) as the sustaining presence through which the seeker labors among the gods and comes to know the strong host of boons.

Inside Sukta 186

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

An invitation: Savitṛ as Viśvānara is called to the assembly with illumined offerings, so the worshipper’s inspired will may embrace the whole world (1.186.1).

  2. Development

The hymn expands the circle of divine cooperation—crafting power (Tvaṣṭṛ) and obstacle-breaking sovereignty (Indra Vṛtrahan)—framing the sacrifice as shared delight and intimate communion (abhipitva).

  3. Climax

The turning from outer rite to inner power: the bright kindling/illumination (dīdhiti) is affirmed as the sustaining force that gives fullness and stability while the seeker strives among the gods.

  4. Where it settles

A settled confidence that through this illumination and right striving, the worshipper ‘comes to know’ the vigorous host of boons and receives long-enduring bounty (1.186.11).

The deity: Savitṛ

  • In the VedaSavitṛ is the divine Impeller who sets beings in motion, awakens thought, and leads worship toward right action; in the Viśvānara coloring he is invoked as the ‘All-in-man,’ a universal presence entering the human assembly and sacrifice.
  • Cosmic functionHe initiates and regulates movement—day’s activity, the stirring of life-forces, and the right ordering of works—while the Viśvānara aspect stresses his pervasion through all worlds and creatures.
  • Inner significanceThe awakening power of clarity and intention (manīṣā): the inner sun that impels noble action, widens consciousness beyond the narrow self, and establishes a felt ‘home’ of communion with the whole.

The seer

  • AnuktaA hymn voice in Maṇḍala 1 whose authorship is not preserved in the Anukramaṇī tradition; the sukta stands out for linking Savitṛ with the Viśvānara all-pervading motif and the repeated emphasis on abhipitva (intimate communion).
