Adhyaya 77: Measurements of Mount Meru, the Boundary Mountains, and the Four Directional Great Trees

Meru-māna, maryādāparvatāḥ, caturdiśaḥ mahāvṛkṣāś ca

Ancient-Geography (Purāṇic Cosmography)

Inside Adhyaya 77

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Within the ongoing Varāha–Pṛthivī instruction cycle, Rudra continues a cosmographic teaching meant to stabilize the listener’s mental map of the sapta-dvīpa world by first fixing the axis (Meru) and then defining its limits (maryādā-parvatas).

  2. Central event

Rudra enumerates Meru’s yojana-based dimensions and structural features (including its foundational spread and the imagery of four great supporting ‘feet’), then introduces the eight maryādā-parvatas (boundary mountains), beginning with Jaṭhara and Devakūṭa in the east, to show how space is delimited and held in order.

  3. Climax resolution

The exposition culminates in the four directional mountains—Mandara (east), Gandhamādana (south), Vipula (west), Supārśva (north)—each crowned by a mahāvṛkṣa (Kadamba, Jambū, Aśvattha, Vaṭa/Nyagrodha). From these trees the chapter derives the names/identities of the surrounding varṣas (Bhadrāśva, Jambūdvīpa, Ketumāla, Uttarakuru) and explains patterned ‘flows’ such as Jāmbūnadī and Jāmbūnada-gold, presenting a balanced world-ecology grounded in stable geography.

Geographical context

Meru; maryādāparvatāḥ (boundary mountains, incl. Jaṭhara and Devakūṭa in the east); Mandara; Gandhamādana; Vipula; Supārśva; Bhadrāśva-varṣa; Ketumāla-varṣa; Uttarakuru; Jambūdvīpa; Jāmbūnadī (divine river); Jāmbūnada (gold).

Ritual instructions

  • BenefitThe chapter functions as cosmographic instruction rather than a prescriptive rite; its implied ‘benefit’ is contemplative orientation—understanding cosmic order (maryādā/limits, directional balance, and stable supports) as a model for equilibrium in the inhabited world.

The narrative frame

  • Rudra (within the Varāha–Pṛthivī instructional frame)Pṛthivī (Earth), with Varāha as the overarching narrator/teacher in the continuing frame · Didactic, enumerative, and cartographic (measurement-and-direction driven)

The emotional journey

  • Dominant RasaAdbhuta (wonder) with a strong Śānta (contemplative) undertone
  • Emotional ProgressionCuriosity about the world’s structure → awe at Meru’s scale and the boundary-mountain ordering → contemplative satisfaction as directions, trees, names, and resource-flows lock into a coherent, balanced cosmogram

Planning a pilgrimage

  • Visit FeasibilityPrimarily mythic-cosmographic (Meru and associated varṣas are not straightforwardly visitable as historical tirthas). For modern devotional travel, practitioners typically substitute ‘Meru’ symbolism via major Śiva/Viṣṇu temples, sacred mountains, or local ‘Meru-sthala’ traditions, but this chapter itself does not anchor a specific terrestrial tirtha itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rather than prescribing social rules, the chapter’s internal logic emphasizes cosmic and terrestrial order: Meru and its boundary mountains function as an explanatory model for stability, delimitation, and balanced spatial organization. This can be read as a cosmographic analogue to maintaining equilibrium in the inhabited world.

No tithis, lunar phases, vrata timings, or seasonal ritual markers are specified in the provided verses. The content is primarily spatial and descriptive (measurements, directions, and regional naming).

It uses earth-support imagery: Meru is described with four great supporting “feet,” and boundary mountains define limits that keep the world-system steady. The described riverine outflow (Jāmbūnadī) and resource generation (Jāmbūnada-gold) present a patterned ecology where flows and materials arise from stable geographies.

The passage references Rudra as the expositor and mentions Sanatkumāra and his younger brothers as mānasā sons of Brahmā, associated with the Kurus (Uttarakuru context). It also notes divine and semi-divine communities (deva, daitya, apsaras, gandharva, yakṣa, rākṣasa, guhya) as inhabitants/attendants in these regions.
