Grant me devotion, O Lord of Raghu—most purifying, that destroys the burning pain of worldly existence and the threefold afflictions. To the surrendered You are the wish-fulfilling cow and the wish-fulfilling tree; be gracious, O Lord, and bestow this boon. O Raghunāyaka—like Agastya to the ocean of becoming—You are easy to serve and the giver of every joy. You tear apart the dreadful sorrows born of the mind; O friend of the lowly, You spread the spirit of equality. You remove hope’s anxieties, fear, and jealousy and the like; You expand humility, discernment, and detachment. Crown of kings, ornament of the heart, support of the earth—grant devotion, the boat to cross the river of transmigration. Ever the swan in the Manasar lake of sages’ minds—Your lotus-feet are adored by Brahmā and Śaṅkara. Banner of the Raghu line, the bridge of sacred order, guardian of the Veda—devourer of time, karma, nature, and the guṇas. Saviour, ferrier across, remover of all दोष—O Lord, ornament of the three worlds: (thus prays) Tulsidas.
Verse 89 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Verse 90 (चौपाई)

Sanaka and the rest departed for Brahma’s realm. Then the brothers bowed their heads at Rama’s feet. All felt shy to question the Lord; they all looked toward the Wind-god’s son. They longed to hear words from the Lord’s own mouth—words which, once heard, would destroy every doubt. The Lord, knower of all hearts, understood the whole assembly and, as though inquiring, said: “Speak—what is it, Hanuman?” Joining his palms, Hanuman then said, “Listen, O compassionate Lord. My master Bharata wishes to ask something, yet his heart shrinks from putting the question. You know my nature, O Monkey: between Bharata and me there is no reserve at all.” Hearing the Lord’s words, Bharata clasped His feet: “Listen, O Lord, remover of the sufferings of the surrendered.”
Verse 91 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Verse 92 (चौपाई)

Let me, O treasure of mercy, take one liberty: I am Your servant, and You are the giver of joy to Your people. The glory of the saints, O King of Raghu, has been sung in many ways by the Vedas and the Puranas. You Yourself have praised them with Your blessed lips; therefore the Lord’s love for them is the greater. I wish to hear, O Lord—O ocean of compassion, skilful in virtue and wisdom—the marks of such saints. Distinguish for me the difference between saint and non-saint, O protector of the surrendered, and make me understand. “Listen, brother, to the marks of saints—countless are the Vedas and Puranas that proclaim them. The conduct of saint and non-saint is like that of an axe and sandalwood: the axe cuts the sandal of Malaya, brother, yet it (the sandal) gives its own virtue and causes fragrance to dwell.”
Verse 93 (दोहा/सोरठा)

He is unentangled in sense-objects, a treasury of gentle virtue; he feels another’s sorrow as sorrow, and another’s joy as joy. Equable, having conquered inner foes, free of pride and detached, he has renounced greed, resentment, elation, and fear. Tender of heart, compassionate to the poor, his devotion to Me is guileless in thought, word, and deed. He honors all and seeks no honor for himself; to Me, such a one is dear as life—like Bharata. Desire has fallen away; he is wholly given to My Name—abiding in peace, dispassion, humility, and gladness. Coolness, simplicity, friendliness, reverence for the holy and learned—these generate dharma. Know, dear one: in whose heart these marks dwell, that is a saint, ever radiant. In self-control, restraint, and disciplined conduct he does not waver; harsh speech he never speaks.
Verse 95 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Verse 96 (चौपाई)

Hear the nature of the un-saintly: never keep their company, not even by mistake. Their association is always a giver of sorrow, as a canker consumes what is sound. In the villains’ hearts there is a special burning; they are ever scorched at the sight of another’s prosperity. Wherever they hear another’s slander, they rejoice as though they had found a treasure. Given over to lust, anger, intoxication, and greed—merciless, deceitful, crooked, impure—they bear causeless enmity toward all, even toward one who has done them good or ill. False is their taking, false their giving; false their food, false their chewing. They speak sweet words like a peacock, yet within they are exceedingly hard of heart and devour like a predator.
Verse 98 (चौपाई)

They covet fine coverings and covet rich food; with weapons in their belly, they feel no dread even of Yama’s city. If they hear another praised, they draw their breath as though seized by a burning jealousy. When they behold someone’s misfortune, they become happy as if they had gained a kingdom. Given over to self-interest, they oppose even their own family—shameless, lustful, greedy, and exceedingly wrathful. They do not honor mother, father, teacher, or brahmin; they ruin themselves and drag others down as well. Under delusion they bear malice toward others; the company of saints and the Lord’s story does not please them. An ocean of faults—dull-witted and sensual—mockers of the Veda, usurpers of others’ wealth. Especially hostile to brahmins, they harbor enmity; hypocrisy and deceit they keep in the heart, wearing a holy guise.
Verse 100 (चौपाई)

No dharma is equal to doing good to others, brother; no baseness equals causing others pain. This is the settled conclusion of all Vedas and Puranas, dear one, known to discerning men. Those who, taking a human body, torment others—those very ones endure the great terrors of worldly existence. Under delusion people commit many sins; intent on self-interest, they destroy their own good in the world to come. To such I become Time itself, their kinsman—dispensing the fruits of good and evil deeds. Considering this, the truly wise worship Me, knowing the sorrows of samsara. They abandon fruit-bearing action that yields both merit and demerit, and worship Me—the Lord of gods, men, and sages. Though I have spoken the qualities of saints and non-saints, those do not fall into becoming who keep this discernment firmly in view.
sunahu tāta māyā-kṛta guna aru doṣa aneka | guna yaha ubhaya na dekhiahĩ dekhia so abibeka ||41||

so paratra dukha pāvai sira dhuni dhuni pachitāi | kālahi karmahi īsvarahi mithyā doṣa lagāi ||43||

jo na tarai bhava sāgara nara samāja asa pāi | so kṛta niṁdaka manda-mati ātmāhana gati jāi ||44||
