One is the All-pervading: with speech have all assembled to the Lord of heaven; one, the All-pervading, the Guest of men. He, primeval, hath welcomed the new-comer; along his track the course hath turned—unto the One alone, indeed, in manifold wise.
Rishi: Atharvanic/Angirasa tradition (specific ṛṣi attribution varies by anukramaṇī; requires verification for AVŚ 7.21.1).
Devata: Āditya/Sūrya as 'the One, all-pervading Lord'; alternatively a monistic 'Pati' principle.
Chandas: Mixed/irregular (close to Triṣṭubh cadence in parts; requires metrical checking against pada lengths).
Primary: shanta
Secondary: adbhuta
Sāyaṇa construes the 'One, all-pervading' as the supreme lordly principle (often read as Āditya/Sūrya or the highest Pati) to whom the gods converge 'by speech', i.e., by mantra. 'Atithi of men' is the deity who comes to the sacrificer’s house as the oblation’s recipient. 'Primeval welcoming the new' is glossed as the ancient deity being newly invoked in each rite; the 'track/course' is the ordained cosmic/ritual path (solar or yajñic), whose regular turning guarantees efficacy when followed.
To align the sacrificer with the single sovereign power that governs the gods and men, securing orderly recurrence (ṛta-like regularity) and abundant outcomes.
Integration and coherence: reduces mental fragmentation; supports steadiness and social harmony (a health determinant).
Supports sattva and prāṇa regulation through unifying contemplation; calms vāta-driven dispersal.
Mindfulness-based unification; reducing rumination by anchoring attention to a single stable reference.
paustika
Align the sacrificer/household with the single sovereign principle so that life’s cycles and outcomes turn along a stable track.
Unification formula (eka-sthāpanā) + assembly-through-speech (vāc as gathering rite) + track-turning (vartanī) as destiny-alignment.
Confusion, factional conflict, scattered intentions, loss of direction.
Orderly recurrence, success through coherence, household unity.
All assemble with speech to the Lord of heaven—one all-pervading being, the Guest of men. The primeval welcomes the new; the course turns along his track toward the One, in manifold ways.
The verse integrates multiplicity into a single center: scattered faculties (viśve) gather through vāc to a unifying principle. The ‘Guest’ is the indwelling presence receiving each new moment; life’s cycles return to the One.
Many names and routes can converge on one reality; when speech and intention gather to a single center, life’s turning becomes coherent rather than random.
Rest attention on ‘eka vibhu’ as the all-pervading witness; practice hospitality to each arising thought as ‘newcomer’.
anahata
slow_meditative breathing with mental repetition ‘ekaḥ’ on inhale, ‘vibhuḥ’ on exhale
A single luminous presence filling the room and body; thoughts arrive as guests and are welcomed, not fought.
Non-dual centering (ekāgratā tending toward advaya).
Recite once, then sit in silent witnessing for 5 minutes; whenever attention scatters, return to ‘eka’.
Anchor on repeated ekaḥ vibhuḥ; keep a measured rise on patiṃ divaḥ; soften on atithiḥ.
Pause after ekaḥ vibhuḥ; slight caesura before taṃ vartanir anu.
vibhuḥ: pronounce bh clearly (not ‘vibu’), atithiḥ: crisp tithi sequence, vāvṛta: maintain long ā and retroflex ṛ
Even, contemplative, slightly luminous tone; avoid martial emphasis.
As a unification charm, it is often more effective with fewer repetitions and longer silence afterward (sound gathers, then silence seals).
1
Feeling scattered, conflicted, or facing group discord; seeking a unifying purpose.
At dawn; before important conversations; after emotional upheaval.
Greater coherence and calm; improved decision clarity; softened interpersonal friction.
If used to suppress legitimate plurality/voices, it can become coercive; pair unity with listening.
