Soma Pavamāna (the purifying Soma)

This short Pavamāna hymn praises Soma as he is purified through the waters and fleece, where awakened thoughts and inspired insights contend and become ordered into a stable “fold” of increase. Soma is celebrated as the kavi who carries poetic power through all worlds, granting glory among the gods and practical abundance to the capable worshipper. The hymn culminates in a direct request for nourishment, wide light, divine delight, and the repulsion of hostile forces.

Mantras

Mantra 1

When in this (clarified Soma) the luminous forces of thought contend like eager racers, as peoples gather toward the Sun, then he—choosing the Waters (the purifying currents)—flows on, becoming more seer-like, and he establishes a ‘fold’ of ordered fullness for the increase of the inner herds (rays of knowledge and powers), a formation of inspired mind.

Mantra 2

In a twofold way he unveils the home of immortality and widens the worlds for the finder of the luminous heaven. The inspired thoughts, swelling like lowing cows in their own pasture, moving by the law of Ṛta, press toward and hasten around the bright drop (Indu).

Mantra 3

When the Seer bears his poetic vision all around, like a hero’s chariot traversing all the worlds, he fashions glory among the gods for the mortal; and new, manifold riches of being come for the capable power of right action (dakṣa).

Mantra 4

Born for splendor, he goes forth into splendor; he gives the bird-like uplift of life-power to the singers as splendor. Clothed in splendor, arriving at immortality, they become true—kindled together in a measured steadfastness.

Mantra 5

Flow toward us with food and force; bring the horse and the cow—make wide light. Delight the gods within. For you can bear all these things well; therefore, O purifying Soma, press back the adversaries (forces of obstruction and ignorance).
